Biography

1776 Project
Private Hugh Luckey served with Lincoln County Regiment, North Carolina Militia during the American Revolution.

Hugh Luckey (1763-1841) was a Revolutionary War veteran from North Carolina who later settled in Tennessee. Based on his own testimony in his Revolutionary War pension application[1], he was born in 1763 in Lancaster County in colonial Pennsylvania. From a will probated in 1799 in Lincoln County, North Carolina[2], we learn that Hugh's father was James Luckey of Lincoln County; James' wife's name was Sarah, and this is most likely Hugh's mother.

Sometime between 1763 and 1779, Hugh's family appears to have migrated along the Great Wagon Road from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to Lincoln County, North Carolina. Hugh's Revolutionary War pension application[1] states that when he was 16, he entered the Continental Army as a militia man under a Captain Lofton and a Colonel [William] Graham and that he participated in numerous skirmishes before being discharged three years later.

On 18 February 1794 Hugh married Dinah Bond in Lincoln County (bondsman: Thomas McGee).[3]

Hugh's father James died in Lincoln County in 1799.[2] In his will, probated that same year, James named "my son Hugh Luckey" and David Williams as co-executors of the estate. Hugh also inherited half of his father's 198-acre tract of land, as well as a horse and some livestock.

Hugh is enumerated as a head of household in Lincoln County in both the 1800 census, in which he heads a family of nine,[4] and the 1810 census, in which he heads a family of 19.[5] Sometime between 1817 (when daughter Nancy was born) and 1820 Hugh's family moved to Tennessee; in the 1820 census he is found as a head of household in Franklin County, Tennessee.[6] By 1830 he had moved again, to Fayette County, Tennessee.[7]

In January 1833 Hugh appeared in Fayette County court to apply for a federal pension for Revolutionary War veterans established by an act passed by Congress in 1832. His application file (S4580) contains many interesting details about his service.[1] The U.S. government awarded Hugh a pension of $20 per annum for the rest of his life.[8][9]

On 28 February 1833, a deed was registered in Hardiman County, Tennessee court conveying 400 acres in that same county from William Polk to Hugh Luckey for $1,600.[10] Hugh appears one final time in the census in Fayette County in 1840.[11]

Hugh passed away on 18 Jan 1841 in Fayette County (source: Revolutionary War pension application file), and Isaac Luckey was appointed administrator of his estate.[12] Hugh's burial place is unknown.

It is difficult to assemble a complete list of the children of Hugh Luckey and Dinah (Bond) Luckey, but here are some who are known for certain:

  • Sarah (Sallie) Luckey (1797-1878), married Archibald (Archard) Hatchett
  • James Luckey (1798-Aft.1860)
  • Mary (Polly) Luckey (1800-Aft.1870), married David Davis
  • Isabella Luckey (1803-1882), married Andrew Jackson Donaldson
  • Isaac Luckey (1813-1872)
  • Nancy Luckey (1817-1872), married John Robert Graham

Notes

The following entries appear in Fayette County court minutes after Hugh's death:

  • In 1841 the court ordered three unrelated men to set aside one year's support out of Hugh's estate for his widow, "Dianah Luckey". From this order, we can be sure that Dinah survived Hugh; but how long she lived is not known.
  • In 1845, Rufus Luckey signed over to Isaac Luckey his power of attorney for all matters in relation to the estate of Hugh Luckey, deceased. Rufus states that he was to inherit one-eleventh of a tract of land that was approximately 300 acres. [13]
  • On 24 Nov 1846, James Luckey of Leake County, Mississippi, gave Isaac Luckey power of attorney for disposition of James' portion of lands once belonging to "my father Hugh Luckey". This power of attorney was later recorded in Fayette County, Tennessee court.[14]
  • On 29 January 1848, Edward Smith, David Davis, Amos Boyd, Isabel Donaldson, and Nancy Luckey, "all residents of Fayette County", sold the portions of the estate they had inherited from the estate of Hugh Luckey to Isaac Luckey for $1,050. The tract was 500 acres minus a 100-acre deduction.[15]
  • On 1 Feb 1849, Archard Hatchett and Sarah Hatchett "formerly Sarah Luckey" of Franklin County gave Isaac Luckey of Fayette County power of attorney to help dispose of Sarah's portion.[16]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Hugh by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Hugh:
