Biography

Alexander McDonald "Don" Luckey was born 26 Oct 1902 in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA to George Henry Luckey 1858 - 1928 and Kathrine Lucy McDonald 1862 - 1904.[1][2][3] When he was 12 days old, he was baptized at St George Catholic Church in Corryville, with Albert Luckey and Maria Birkemeyer as his godparents. [4] . At the time of his baptism, he was given the name "Alexander", although he seems to have also been given the middle name "McDonald" perhaps after his mother's maiden name. This became shortened to Donald, and he was most familiarly known as Don.

Donald's mother passed away in 1904[5]. In 1910, Don and 3 of his siblings, Florence, Catherine, and Robert were in the St Joseph Orphan Asylum, along with 10 year old Louis Luckey[6].

Don married Estella M. Bercot (1904-1986) 10 Mar 1930 in Fort Wayne, Allen, Indiana, USA.[7]

Don passed away 19 Aug 1989 in Fort Wayne, Allen, Indiana, USA and is buried at Covington Memorial Gardens, Fort Wayne, Allen, Indiana,USA .[1][2]

Research Notes

  • Season listed Donald A Luckey with the same birth and death dates. I feel strongly that these are one and the same as Alexander went by the name of Don and Donald. I have not found any documentation where they are listed separately. Therefore, I merged the two. GHW
    • supported by baptism record for Alexander Luckey b 26 Oct 1902 to George Luckey and Cath McDonald, and marriage record giving name as "Alexander McDonald Luckey". McDonald likely for mother's maiden name, but not a saint's name so would not be included in Catholic baptism. From McDonald, we preumably get "Donald" or "Don"

Apparently, he used "Don", "Alex", and "Donald" as his first name at various times. Don had 7 (possibly 8) siblings:

William Harry Luckey (1883 – 1956)
George Albert Anthony Luckey (1885 – 1965)
Mary Alma Luckey (1887 – 1984)
Anna Camille Luckey (1891 – 1974)
Florence Luckey (1894 – 1988)
Kathryn Luckey (1898 – 1982)
Robert Otto Luckey (1901 – 1983)
There is a Louis Luckey listed in the 1910 census for the St. Joseph Orphan Asylum. I have not found any other records as of yet.
