I found this online .... dont know whether it is relevant, but it would explain "his brother Johannes" plus "they dropped the last part of their surname when coming to New Zealand" and "Carl was born in Prussia" and the timing .... Lomax-181 14:24, 15 December 2014 (EST)

They arrived in CA 1852 or one to two years earlier. Of Fred MEYER is known, that he settled 1852 in Australia and 1862 in New Zealand and has several descendants in that area. What was the fate of his brother, Carl Heinrich Ludwig MEYER?" from http://www.californiagenealogy.org/goldrush/wanted/carl_heinrich_ludwig_meyer.htm

PROBABLY NOT MEYER = not supported by DNA. (Y-DNA for Meyer is typically R-).
Y-DNA indicates probable Leitian, or "Old Prussian" ancestry. ( Y-DNA = N-M231 group).
Y DNA is N-FGC13372 or downstream from there. This is of East Prussian/Lithuanian origin according to Y-DNA matches on FTDNA.
