I found this online .... dont know whether it is relevant, but it would explain "his brother Johannes" plus "they dropped the last part of their surname when coming to New Zealand" and "Carl was born in Prussia" and the timing .... Lomax-181 14:24, 15 December 2014 (EST)

"From: Franz-Josef Meyer Date: Mon, 2 Oct 2000 20:03:17 +0200 Subject: GOLDRUSH MOST WANTED - Carl Heinrich Ludwig (Charles Henry Louis ?) MEYER

Carl Heinrich Ludwig MEYER was born 11-May-1836 in Hamburg, Germany and is said to have settled in California. He left Germany at least together with his brother Johann Karl Friedrich (John Charles Frederick, later known as Fred) MEYER who was born in Hamburg on 10-Jul-1834. They arrived in CA 1852 or one to two years earlier. Of Fred MEYER is known, that he settled 1852 in Australia and 1862 in New Zealand and has several descendants in that area. What was the fate of his brother, Carl Heinrich Ludwig MEYER?" from http://www.californiagenealogy.org/goldrush/wanted/carl_heinrich_ludwig_meyer.htm

June - 2018 PROBABLY NOT MEYER = not supported by DNA. (Y-DNA for Meyer is typically R-). Y-DNA indicates probable Leitian, or "Old Prussian" ancestry. ( Y-DNA = N-M231 group). Y DNA is N-FGC13372 or downstream from there. This is of East Prussian/Lithuanian origin according to Y-DNA matches on FTDNA.
