Biography

Matías was born about 1655,[1] possibly to Juan Luís Luján and an unknown mother. He was married to Francisca Romero about 1674 and they had three daughters, Catalina, Antonia, and María Juana, by the time of the Pueblo Rebellion in 1680.[2] They survived and were living in Guadalupe del Paso in 1684 with two more children, Felipe and Juana; they were extremely poor. They had no food and barely any clothing for Matías and Francisca - the rest of the family was "naked."[3] In 1693 they returned to New Mexico with four more children: Juan, Pascual, Miguel and Manuela.[4] They settled in the Santa Cruz de la Cañada area.[2] Matías died sometime before 1707 when his wife was listed as a widow in the 1707 Santa Cruz de la Cañada census.[5]
