Biography

David Luke was baptised 12th April 1781 at Prendergast Haverfordwest, the son of David and Margaret Luke. As Luke is not a common name and as yet I have not found another David Luke in the area, I am assuming that this is the correct David.

Elizabeth Furlong was the daughter of Peter Furlong and his wife Elizabeth Williams and according to some sources was born 1782 at Talbenny parish. But as yet no baptism record has turned up. Elizabeth Furlong married David Luke 2nd October 1803 at Talbenny parish church Pembrokeshire. The Banns were read from 11th September 1803 up to the wedding in October.

The couple had five children, these are two Mary’s. The first born in 1804, and sadly died before 1807, when the second child to be named Mary was baptised that year. The other children are Margaret (b 1809) John (b 1812) and James (b 1817).

We do not know too much about the early life of David Luke, except that he was a labourer, and lived at Webbs Hill in Broad Haven. Webbs Hill was originally is a little lane that runs from the Baptist chapel in Broad Haven up to Walton West. The area was dotted with little cottages and coal workings. The lower part of Webbs Hill is now in the village of Broad Haven, but I prefer to call it Lower Walton West, as in the time of David the huts and cottages that doted the landscape were closer to Walton than Broad Haven. Also in that area were members of his wife’s extended family, namely Furlongs and Williams’s

David Luke of Webbs Hill Broad Haven died aged 67 and was buried 5th September 1844 at Walton West parish church. If his age is correct David was born in 1777. We still do not have a birth location for David, but it is possible that he is related to the Luke’s of North Pembrokeshire.

Elizabeth Luke can be found on the 1841 census at Webbs Hill in the parish of Walton West, her husband David is not at the family home, but there is a relative on Mary’s side, he is Timothy Williams who was born in 1836. But we do not know which Timothy Williams he is as there was two, both born about the same time.

By the time of the 1851 census, Elizabeth is living with her daughter Margaret and her son in law Job Noot. Who is the landlord of the Royal Victoria a pub that stood at the bottom of Merlins Hill, in Merlins Bridge near Haverfordwest? Elizabeth is aged 77 and a widow. There are five of Elizabeth’s grandchildren at the pub. These are Caroline (b 1836) Eli (b 1837) Simon (b 1840) and Jacob (b 1851). Also at that address is Thomas Pritchard and Peter Williams. Peter Williams is nephew of Elizabeth, and the son of Mary Williams (born Luke).

Ten years later and Elizabeth is still living with her daughter and son in law, but the address has changed, and they are living at Ruther Lane St Thomas Haverfordwest. The area is around about the Bell Vue. The exact address is not noted, and the number 108 Ruther Lane is simply the enumerator’s number for the entry, not the house number. Along with Elizabeth, her daughter Margaret and son in law Job, there are three grandchildren at the family home. These are Eli, Simon and Jacob.

Elizabeth Luke died in 1863. Her death is recorded in the Haverfordwest District Pembs, this is possibly our Elizabeth. But why is she not buried with her family at St Thomas parish church.

A brief history of their children. The first Mary died in infancy and the second Mary Luke married James Williams of Steynton and had eleven children. Margaret Luke married Job Noot and went on to have Five children. We know that John Luke married, but I have not been able to find any children by that marriage. James Luke was a shoemaker by trade and married a woman by the name of Mary, and settled in Merlins Bridge near Haverfordwest, the couple had five children.
