Biography

He was of Scotch-Irish heritage with the original surname of MacLUKE

He was born in Cheraw District, SC near Welsh Neck & the PeeDee River.

By 1802 he married Elizabeth Alief HAMMONDS Barrentine

He moved from South Carolina to Georgia along with Elizabeth's father, William Barrentine.

In 1813 he was a resident of GA,Jasper-Co. where he served as a constable.

About 1823 he moved his family to GA,Irwin-Co where he was a farmer & one of the earliest school teachers in GA,Irwin-Co.

1829-1833 He served as Justice of the Peace of the 433rd District.

1829-1838 He served as first Lieutenant of the militia in the 433rd District.

He was named in a legislative resolution approved 23 December 1830, as one of the commissioners for the new town of Irwinville.

1837-1840 He was coronoer of GA,Irwin-Co.

In 1839 his wife died at Irwinville, GA

1840-1842 He served as Sheriff of GA,Irwin-Co.

On 23 Mar 1845 he married a second time to Mrs. Sarah (HORTON) DUTTER.

In 1845 he moved to present day GA,Berrien-Co & made his home with his son, Jasper.

He was of the Primitive Baptist religious faith & he sought membership in the Flat Creek Church in GA,Berrien-Co. His letter was accepted on 10 March 1855 & he regularly attended their relligious services. Like many another good citizen of that time, he did not consider it altogether sinful to indulge in the use of ardent spirits occasionally. On 2 April 1856, he confessed to his brethren in church assembley, to having "used too much spiritous liquors" & was by them forgiven.

In 1857 the part of GA,Irwin Co where he resided went into the formation of GA,Wilcox Co.

On 20 Ju 1867 His second wife died & was buried at Taylor Cemetery in Rebecca, Turner Co, GA.

On 1 Feb 1863 Daniel died & was buried on his son Jasper Marion LUKE' s farm, next to his grandson Abraham LUKE who died six months earlier as a Private in the Confederate States Army.

During the American Civil War 4 of his sons & 13 of his grandsons served in the Confederate Army. All of his sons survived the war, but 8 of the 13 grandsons died in service.

About 1868 his son Jasper sold his property & moved to Colquitt.

Today the 2 grave cemetery is located about 10 miles from Nashville, Berrien Co, GA near the community of Rowertown. It is in the woods off Rowetown Church Road & on the grounds of what now is a hunting camp who grant access.

Research Notes

  • Daniel's second wife was referred to as "Mrs. Sarah Dutter" on the marriage record indicating that this was a remarriage for she and Daniel. It is possible that Sarah was Sarah Ammons, daughter of Joshua Grantham Ammons and Sarah Grantham of North Carolina.
  • Important not to confuse Daniel's second wife Sarah with his son Daniel Mack Luke III's wife Sarah Salley Miller. They were married in Nov. of 1823, but the records sometimes overlap due to the similar names.

Daniel was born in 1778. He passed away in 1863.
