Samuel was born in Rodborough, near Stroud, in Gloucestershire. His christening was on 12 March 1815. (1) He was the son of John Luker and Esther Clift. He lived most of his childhood in Bibury, Gloucestershire, where his father was a miller at Arlington Mill. Samuel may have been apprenticed there.
Some time In the 1830s John Luker moved to Minchinhampton and Samuel, now married with his own household, did likewise (2). He went into the milling business with his father and, as Luker &Son, records show that between 1844-47 they had a tenancy at Salmon Mill, owned by Nathanial Marling, and another at Grove Mill which continued until 1858. (3) As evident from the 1851 census Samuel's son, also called John [Luker- 322], had by then entered the business as a miller and the family's address, Marlings Mill, Painswick, Stroud, suggested another tenancy. (4).
By 1861 Samuel and his family were living in Gloucester, the census of the year showing their address as Quay Street, St Nicholas Parish, and Samuel as a miller employing not only his son John, but also his son Henry and his uncle, Thomas Luker. (5) Samuel also took over the tenancy of the Duke of Gloucester Inn. He died in December 1867. (ref?)
