Biography

William was born at Thorpe Lidget and baptised at the Inghamite chapel in Howden, Yorkshire, England, on 11 April 1819. He was the son of William Lumby and Abiah Clough[1][2]
At the time of the 1841 England Census he was living with his parents at Bishopsoil in the township of Skelton, Yorkshire.[3] He gave his age as 20 years, while his father, William Lumby Snr gave his as 75 years, and his mother Abiah as 70 years. Also present was Elizabeth Lumby who also indicated she was 20 years old.
On 24 December 1850 William married Dinah Blanchard in Bubwith, Yorkshire. He had been living in Spaldington and she in Foggathorpe, with both as servants.[4]
At the time of the 1851 census, William (29) and Dinah (23) were living with his mother (79), their 1st child Mary Ann (1), and had a visitor Simon Yates (32), in Skelton.[5]
They would have 3 more children, Sarah Lumby, George William Lumby and Clough Lumby, before Dinah passed away[6] and was buried in Howden on 23 November 1854.[7] In 1861 William lived with his mother and children in New Fields.[8]
In 1881 William lived alone at Allison Cottage in New Fields in the parish of Eastrington.[9]
Research notes
The 1851 census gives William's wife's name as Hannah. This seems to be an error on the part of the enumerator. Clough Lumby's mother's maiden name was Blanshard.[10] Fuller-8857 13:22, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
