Biography

Proof exists that the Robert Lumpkin who was son of Capt. George and Mary Cody Lumpkin was born before 1747 in VA, and perhaps as early as 1744 (contrary to what many Lumpkin descendants have believed). It is important to note that George Lumpkin's son Robert was NOT the Robert Lumpkin who was born 25 Nov 1756 in VA and died 12 Nov 1842 in Indiana, who married Elizabeth Forrest. The two Roberts were born about 10 years apart, and were probably cousins. Earlier generations of researchers assumed there was just one Robert Lumpkin in Halifax & Pittsylvania Counties, VA during the 1770s-1780s, and that he was the son of George Lumpkin & Mary Cody. But actually there were two Roberts (one Robert married Drusilla Hendricks about 1770, and another Robert married Elizabeth Forrest in 1784). The Robert who married Elizabeth Forrest wasn't the son of George Lumpkin & Mary Cody. Incorrect pedigrees have been copied and recopied over the years, resulting from erroneous research done probably in the 1930's. DAR memberships through this line were flawed, and the DAR has suspended the Lumpkin line (for new members) until the confusion can be straightened out. Therefore, DAR records are not a good source or proof for the Lumpkin lineage.

It is well-established and proven, from his son's family bible and from his gravestone in Randolph Co., Indiana, that the Robert Lumpkin who married Elizabeth Forrest was born 25 Nov 1756. So he couldn't be the son of George Lumpkin due to the following documentation.

On 25 Feb 1766, Hans Hendrick sold 194 acres in Halifax County, VA, to George Lumkin "of Orange County, North Carolina" [where George had been appointed judge], the deed being witnessed by George Lumpkin, Jr. and Robert Lumpkin [see Halifax Co. Deed Book 6, p.152]. Therefore George Lumpkin's eldest two sons were born before 1747 in order to have been old enough to sign as a witness to this deed in 1766. The following year, on the "First List of Tithables of Pittsylvania County, VA," year 1767, appears "George Lumpkin, son Robert & son George."

George Lumpkin's two sons would have to be at least 16 years old in 1767 to appear on this list, and they were probably over 20 when they signed as witnesses to the deed in 1766. Robert Lumpkin b. 1756 would have been only 9 years old when the deed was signed. This alone proves that George Lumpkin's son Robert is NOT the Robert Lumpkin born 25 November 1756 in VA who married Elizabeth Forrest in Halifax Co., VA, and died 12 November 1842 in Randolph Co., Indiana (birth and death dates from his son Anderson Lumpkin's family bible and from Robert Lumpkin's gravestone in Randolph Co., Indiana). The same Robert Lumpkin didn't marry both women! Rather, Capt. George Lumpkin's son Robert Lumpkin was born about 1746, married Drusilla Hendricks about 1770 in Pittsylvania or Halifax Co., VA, and moved to Georgia by the late 1790's, where he and Drusilla lived in Oglethorpe, Wilkes, Morgan, and Jasper Counties for many years, until their deaths in the 1820's. They both died in Georgia and are buried there.

George's son Robert may already have been in Georgia by 1786, for he was a testator for two deeds that year, one, dated 15 April 1786 wherein George Lumpkin (Jr.) sold to Moses Going some land on Buffalo Creek, witness Robert Lumpkin, and another deed, (exact date not given), wherein George Lumpkin (Jr.) and wife Ann sold to Joshua Davis some land on Long Creek, witness Robert Lumpkin (see http://www.giddeon.com/wilkes/books/early-records-of-ga-vol1/255-266.shtml ). Another deed, dated January 5, 1789, shows that Robert's brother George "Lumkin" (Jr.) and wife Ann of Wilkes Co., GA transferred to Jesse Witt of Henry Co, VA, "400 acres on east side of Buffalo fork of Long creek, now in Witt's possession". (see http://www.giddeon.com/wilkes/books/early-records-of-ga-vol2/104-125.shtml ).

Robert was back in Virginia by 1791, when Robert "Lumkin" signed in right of his wife Drusilla as one of the heirs in her father John Hendrick's estate, 12 Dec 1791 in Halifax Co., VA. This proves that he wasn't the same Robert Lumpkin who married Elizabeth Forrest in 1784, because Drusilla was still living in 1791 and they were still husband and wife. According to the Pittsylvania County Records, on March 21, 1792, George Lumpkin of Wilkes County, Ga. gave a power of attorney to his son Robert Lumpkin of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. Robert apparently settled up his father's remaining business in Virginia, then moved his family back to Georgia before 1798.

The Georgia Tax Index, 1789-1799 (Ancestry.com) shows Robert Lumpkin and (his oldest son) Harrison Lumpkin in Duke District, Oglethorpe County, GA in 1798 (the only two Lumpkins in that district). The 1800 Georgia Territorial Census for Oglethorpe County lists: Joseph, John, Pitman, John Jr., Robert, and Harrison. This was undoubtedly (Capt.) George Lumpkin's brother Joseph (b. 1739), Joseph's two oldest sons (John b. 1766 and Pittman b. 1768), then John Lumpkin b. 1763 (son of Capt. George), and also Capt. George's oldest son, Robert (b. 1749/1750), and Robert's oldest son, Harrison (b. 1770/1771).

Robert and Drusilla Hendricks Lumpkin remained in close association with Robert's brothers John and George and also with the descendants of Joseph Lumpkin. They lived in Georgia for the rest of their lives, until Robert died in the 1820's in Jasper County, Georgia. Census and other records show that they had at least 13 children, born 1770 thru 1797: Harrison, George, Peyton, Robert Jr., Hendrick Jordan, Giles, William, John L., Walter Evan, and at least four daughters (please note: he did NOT have a son named Anderson Lumpkin, so he couldn't be the Robert Lumpkin b. 25 Nov 1756 who married Elizabeth Forrest, listed as Anderson's father in Anderson Lumpkin's family bible). Robert Lumpkin and his wife Drusilla both died in Jasper Co., GA. Drusilla was still living there in 1827, when her name appeared on court papers.

Also please note: Robert Lumpkin and Drusilla Hendricks were not the parents of Martha ("Mathey") Lumpkin who married William McCraw on 2 May 1791 in Halifax Co., VA. The Robert Lumpkin who signed the marriage bond for Martha was her older brother, Robert Lumpkin (b. 25 Nov 1756) who married Elizabeth Forrest.

In summary, to clearly delineate between the two Robert Lumpkins who were born between 1746-1756 and both lived in Halifax/Pittsylvania County, VA, who have frequently been confused with one another:

1. Robert Lumpkin, son of George and Mary Cody Lumpkin (this Robert):
>was born before 1747 in VA (probably 1745 or 1746).
>married Drusellar (Drusilla) Hendrick(s) by 1770 in Halifax or Pittsylvania Co., VA.
>Robert & Drusilla moved to Georgia by the late 1790's, where they lived in Oglethorpe, Wilkes, Morgan & Jasper Co. for the remainder of their lives, both dying in the 1820's.
>had 13 or more children (born abt. 1770-1797): Harrison, George, Peyton, Robert, Hendrick "Jordan", Giles, William, John L., Walter Evan, and at least four daughters (but NOT Martha who married William McCraw).

2. Robert Lumpkin, son of Moore and Martha Richardson Lumpkin:
>was born 25 Nov 1756 in VA.
>was the brother of Mathey (Martha) Lumpkin who married William McCraw
>married Elizabeth Forrest on 15 Apr 1784 in Halifax Co., VA.
>moved to Knox Co., TN in 1800, then to Randolph Co., IN in 1830. Died there 12 Nov 1842, Elizabeth died there 3 Aug 1848 (gravestones in Nettle Creek Baptist cemetery).
>had 11 children (born 1786-1812): John R., Mary, James L., Robert, Sarah, Richard, William M., Elizabeth, Washington, Nancy, and Anderson.
>Anderson Lumpkin's family bible lists Anderson's parents, Robert Lumpkin and Elizabeth Forrest and their birthdates and all of their children's names and birthdates.
