Biography

Peder Frederik Lund was born at Sondergaard farm, Biersted in 1844, the son of Andreas Hansen Lund and Ane Christensdatter.^[1] He trained as a pharmacist in Denmark but immigrated to America in about 1866, settling initially in Chicago where he worked as carpenter. He was married before 1870 in Illinois to Anna C Thompson. The family moved to Minnesota where he became an artist. He passed away in Brooklyn, New York in 1895.^[2]

"Peter F. Lund was born May 8th, 1846 in Denmark. He emigrated around the year 1866 and settled in Chicago, Illinois. His wife, Anna C. Thompson, was born on March 8th, 1847 in Norway and emigrated in 1853. Lund and Anna were married sometime between 1866 and 1871. They had 6 children. Between the years of 1876 and 1879, the family moved to Albert Lea, Minnesota. The 1880 census reports Lund as a resident of Albert Lea and lists his occupation as “artist”. In 1883, Lund was listed in the Minneapolis, Minnesota directory. He would make Minneapolis, Minnesota and Duluth, Minnesota his home and studio until 1895.

In 1886, Lund showed one work, “Storm on the Coast” at the 1st Annual Minnesota Industrial Exposition. The following year, at the 2nd Annual Minnesota Industrial Exposition, he showed two works, one of which was titled “Sea View on the Coast of Denmark”. Lund was primarily a marine painter; his death certificate actually lists him as such. It is not known the amount of education he had, but experts believe he may have not been a self-taught artist. His primary subject was Lake Superior with clipper ships. He also painted ship portraits and captured the local Minnesota logging scenes.

It is not known why, but in 1895, Lund moved to New York City. In 1897 he entered the National Academy of Design show exhibiting the work, “Moonlight Over Lake Superior”. On June 16th, 1898, while living at 219 Hopkinson Ave. in Brooklyn, NY, Lund died of spleen and liver complications. He was buried in the Evergreens Cemetery in New York City. According to the census of 1900, his wife Anna and their children returned to Minneapolis, Minnesota."

Research Notes

There is a conflict between the birth date listed in Danish records and those found in American records and his artist biography. The Danish parish record lists his birth date as 6 May 1844 in Biersted, Aalborg, Denmark. The American records list the dates as 8 May 1846.
