William was born in 1899. He was the son of William Lunn and Alice Caroline Ansell. He enlisted with the Royal East Kent Regt (The Buffs) on 27th Dec 1917, He was enrolled at Canterbury on 14th Feb, 1918 and assigned to 3rd Battalion. He was transferred to the Queens Royal West Surrey Regt based at Colchester on 30th Mar 1918. He arrived with the regiment in France on 11th Aug 1918 and on the 16th Aug was transferred to 1st Battalion Royal West Kent Regt and posted to the field. According to regimental diaries the battalion were to relieve the New Zealanders at the front line in the Ytres area of the Somme on 25th Sep and a large assault was planned for Sep 27th to take the 'African Trench'. When going over the top on the 27th the battalion received heavy casualties from multiple enemy machine gun posts. William received several gun shot wounds to both legs and an arm. He spent many months in various hospitals having operations and recovering. He passed away in 1941.
