In the 1871 census William is listed as a visitor in Fountains Earth, Yorkshire, and he is a medical student.[1]
His clinical studies were at St Thomas's Hospital in London. [4]
When William was 24 he married Agnes Selioke Thorold on 25 March 1875 in St James Kidbrooke, Blackheath. The couple had one child: Agnes Lilian Thorold Rockliffe.[6]
He was an Opthalmic surgeon at Hull Royal Infirmary.[4]
In the 1881 census William (age 30) was living in Sculcoates, Yorkshire, married but with no children. He was a surgeon. [7]
In the 1891 census William (age 40) was living in Sculcoates, Yorkshire, England. Relation to Head: Head.[8]
In the 1901 census William (age 50) was living in Sculcoates, Yorkshire, England. Age: 51Relation to Head of House: Head.[9]
In the 1911 census William (age 60) was living in Hessle with his family.[10]
William died at the age of 80 on 23 June 1930 in Hasle nr Hull. "Peacefully in his chair after coming in from his garden".[11]
His obituary in the British Medical Journal provides a real insight into this man.[2]
