117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division Corp Lunsford was killed the day before the Allies broke through the Hindenberg Line which resulted in the Germans losing the war.

"Awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. From his citation: "for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, A.E.F., near Bellicourt, France, 7 October 1918. When the line was held up by enemy machine-gun fire, Corporal Lunsford strapped an automatic rifle to his shoulder and advanced in the face of machine-gun fire. Firing as he went forward, he killed four of the enemy before he fell, nearly riddled with bullets."
