Notes Lewis Rector Revolutionary War Pension File Buncombe Co. April 16, 1834 - Appears in court, Thomas Payne, who sayeth that he has been well acquainted with Lewis Rector ever since very shortly after the Revolutionary War, he believes fifty years ago, and that before he saw the said Lewis Rector, he heard that Rector had been a Revolutionary Soldier and called an Eighteen months man and that this deponent, after becoming acquainted with the said Rector had frequent conversations with him on the subject of the war and this deponent does not recollect the particulars of the conversations, but does recollect that all his assertions went to confirm and not contradict the report and this deponent further states that the said Rector was a man of good repute and to whose assertions full credit and faith was due and further states that for many years after his first acquaintance with the said Lewis Rector he, the said Lewis was of sound mind, but for the last ten years or more he, the said Rector, has become insane and so deranged that he is incompetent to take an oath or transact his own concerns and this deponent believes that no court of justice would administer to him an oath in consequence of his incompetence. This deponent further states that Lewis Rector, a resident of Buncombe Co., in the neighborhood of this deponent and that he believes Rector to be over seventy years of age and that he is a very poor man in indigent circumstances. Signed Thomas Payne. Nathan Harrison came forward and made substantially the same statement as to Revolutionary War service and the state of Lewis Rector's mind and circumstances. James Gudger made similar statements and further the County Court of Quarter Sessions named James Gudger a guardian for the purpose of transacting the business of Lewis Rector and family. Further that Rector appears to be seventy years or upwards. Lewis was granted a pension of 50 dollars and 33 cents per annum 2. #10.184 North Carolina Frances Rector widow of Lewis Rector who was a pensioner under the act of 1832 and who died on the 30th January, 1844 in Buncombe County in the state of NC who was a private in the company commanded by Captain Sharps ...Inscribed on the Roll of Fayetteville, to commence on the 4th day of March, 1836. Certificate of Pension issued the 21-day of January 1847. Declaration In order to obtain the benefits of the Act of 1838, for widows Buncombe Co. On this 27th day of March 1844, before me James Sharp, JP, is the widow of Lewis Rector who was a private in the revolution; further that she was married to the said Lewis Rector in the month of December, 1788 in Wilkes Co. NC, and that her husband died on the 30th day of January 1844, in the County of Buncombe. That she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service, nor been married to any other person and remains a widow. She knows of no record of her marriage and that her husband was in the right of a pension at his death. (Her Mark) Appeared, 11 April 1844 Thomas Payne, aged 79 sayeth that he became acquainted with Lewis Rector and Frances, his wife shortly after the Revolutionary War and was informed at that time that Lewis and Frances was married together and lived a near neighbor to this deponent, first within half a mile, afterward about three miles, and lived there for several years and subsequently moved from Iredel County, formerly Rowan County, to Buncombe County, where this deponent has been acquainted with the said Lewis and Frances. During this time, Lewis and Frances lived together as husband and wife and this deponent never heard the validity or legality of their marriage doubted or questioned and that his acquaintance is somewhere between 50 and 55 years. Declaration In order to obtain the benefits of the Act of 1848, for widows Buncombe County, NC On this 19th day of Oct. 1849, appeared Frances Rector aged 77 years, (declares that she is the widow of Lewis Rector, who was a private during the war of the revolution, and drew a pension at Fayetteville, NC. Her said husband resided in Buncombe CO until he died. For particulars of his service she refers to his Declaration and papers on file. She further sates that she applied for and received a pension at the Jonesboro, TN agency. For the particulars of her marriage to the said Lewis Rector and his death she refers to her earlier papers. Christopher1700 South Jefferson AvenueSpringfield, MissouriDear Sir:The data which follow were obtained from the papers on file in Revolutionary War pension claim, w.45, based upon military service in that war of Lewis Rector.The date and place of birth of Lewis Rector are not shown, nor are the names of either of his parents designated.Lewis Rector enlisted in Surry County, NC, in May, 1782, served as a private in Captain Sharp's Company, under Colonels Armstrong and Archibald Lytle in the NC Troops and was discharged in 1783, having served 18 months.After the war, he lived in Wilkes, Iredell, and Buncombe Counties, NC.He was allowed pension under the act of June 7, 1832, under Certificate No. 29920, issued May 4, 1835. In 1834, it was stated that he was over seventy years of age. He then resided in Buncombe County, NC, where he died January 30, 1844.The soldier married in December 1788, Frances Lunsford. They were married at the home of John Rector, in Wilkes county, NC. Relationship of John Rector to the soldier, Lewis Rector, was not shown. Soldier's widow, Frances, was allowed pension on her application executed March 27, 1844, at which time she was aged seventy-one years and resided in Buncombe County, NC.Children are referred to, three of whom were living as early as 1795, no names of children are given and there are no further family data.Very Truly YoursA.D.
