Michele Lupo, son of Rocco Lupo and Onofria Saitta, is born 20 April 1874 in the Off. 1 district of the city of Palermo.^[1]

His younger brother Ignazio is a mafioso in league with Giuseppe Morello. Their father, Rocco, is a Mafia associate in Palermo.^[2]

In the 1920 federal census of Hoboken, Ward 3, Hudson, NJ taken 15 January, John Lupo, 38 (b. 1881), heads a household on Monroe St. with his wife Vincenza, 35 (b. 1884), and children Elsie, 7 (b. 1912), Rocco, 4 yr 6 mo. (b. Jul 1915), Angelo, 1 yr 7 mo. (b. Jun 1918). John and his wife were born in Italy. He emigrated in 1899 and his wife in 1906. John is a store keeper with his own grocery. Their children were born in NJ. In the same household are his brother Michael Lupo, 45 (b. 1874), his wife Pegina, 41 (b. 1878), and children Pauline, 15 (b. 1904), Josephine, 13 (b. 1906), and Rocco, 9 (b. 1910). Michael and his wife were born in Italy and emigrated in 1900. Michael is a partner in a grocery store. Pauline was born in NJ and Josephine and Rocco in NY.^[3]

In the 1930 federal census of North Bergen township, Ward 3, Hudson County, New Jersey, taken 15 April, John Lupo, 45 (b. 1885), heads a household at 160 Grand Ave. He owns his home, worth $12,000. With him are his wife, Vincenza, 43 (b. 1887), and children Elsie, 17 (b. 1913), Rocco, 14 (b. 1916), Angela, 12 (b. 1918), and Anna, ten months (b. Jun 1929). John and his wife were born in Italy and their children in New Jersey. John emigrated in 1901 and his wife’s emigration year is unknown. They are naturalized citizens. John is the proprietor of a grocery store. Elsie works as a packer for Lea Mfg.

The next household is at the same address. Michael Lupo, 56 (b. 1874), and his wife Beatrice, 51 (b. 1879), were both born in Italy, emigrated in 1902. Michael is a salesman for a grocery store. Their children at home are on the next page of the census.^[4]
