Jane was born in Thame, Oxfordshire, about 1812. She is the daughter of Harry Lupton and Elizabeth Wells. She was baptised on 28 January 1812 at Thame, Oxfordshire.
Jane appears to have been the first child of the union of her mother with Harry Lupton. Her first marriage was to Henry Reynolds who died in 1806. There were two children of this first marriage.
On 7 April 1830 Jane married Charles Henry Chard, an attorney, at Thame, Oxfordshire. In the church marriage register both are decribed as being of the parish of Thame. As Jane was under 21 the consent of her father was given. One of the witnesses was Amelia Chard - most likely the mother of the groom.
A daughter, Elizabeth Amelia Janette Chard, was born on 23 July 1832 but not baptised until 1841. It appears Elizabeth was born in Reading, Berkshire, while her baptism took place when she was about eight years old, back in Thame, Oxfordshire.
Jane's husband died in 1836 and was buried at the town of his birth, Winchester, Hampshire.
The 1841 census records Jane Chard, with her daughter Elizabeth, residing with her parents in High Street, Thame. Also resident are her brother Sackville Lupton, and sister Elizabeth Lupton.
Jane's mother died in 1848.
The 1851 census shows Jane, aged 39, a widow, and described as "gentlewoman", and her daughter Elizabeth Chard, now 18, unmarried, gentlewoman and born in Reading, again resident with her father Harry Lupton, aged 66, and now a widower, in the High Street, New Thame (Thame), Oxfordshire. Also resident is a visitor and three servants.
At the 1861 census Jane is again recorded as residing with her father who is now 76. they remain in the High Street, Thame, Oxfordshire. Resident with them at the census are her sister Elizabeth Lupton, aged 45 and unmarried, and a great grand-daughter of her father, Bessie Hendley, aged 4 and born in Thame. (Later records confirm she is a grand-daughter of Jane's). Also resident are a nurse and a servant.
Jane's father died later in 1861.
In 1871 the census records Jane (59, widow) as head of household remaining in the High Street, Thame. Residing with her are her sister Elizabeth Lupton (55, unmarried) and a nephew Harry Lupton (18, "medical student at St Bartholomew's", born in Thame). There is a resident servant.
At the 1881 census Jane (68) is still head of household living at 91 High Street, Thame. Her sister Elizabeth Lupton (65) is still with her and also resident is her "grandchild", Bessie Hendley (24, unmarried). They have two resident servants.
Jane Chard, widow, died on 6 November 1883 at Thame, and was buried on 10 November at Thame. She was 71 years old. Her death was registered at Thame. Her daughter Elizabeth Amelia Janette Hendley (wife of John Hendley) of Thame, one of the executrixes, was granted probate.
