Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Robert Lusby was a Maryland colonist.

Origin

Robert Lusby was likely born in England around 1625. The following source proves his arrival:

"Robert Lusby demands land of the Lord Prop. for transporting into this province himself Dorothy his wife, Jacob, Elizabeth, Rebecca and Sarah Lusby his children. Anno 1662 in all 300 acres. [1]

Property

Robert may have sold most of his warrant because there is only one record of him patenting land and that was for 50 acres he named Lusby. This land was described as being on the north side of the Severn River and the west side of Ferry Creek when it was patented on 6 MAR 1662.[2] His will mentions a tract called Georgetown which he must have purchased.

Marriage and Family

Robert was married to a woman named Dorothy when he arrived in Maryland and she was still alive when he wrote out his will. The two daughters, Elizabeth and Rebecca are not mentioned in the will, so they either died young or were married when the will was written. Robert's will mentions the following children:

Jacob b. abt. 1655
Sarah b. abt. 1657
Zachariah b. abt 1663
Robert b. abt. 1665

Death

Robert Lusby signed his will on 21 JUL 1673 when he was feeling weak. His will contains long descriptions of the cuts made in the ears of his cattle as these were his most valuable possessions. He had different marks for each of his children and they each received a share of his cattle. An abstract of the will follows:

  • to my son Jacob Lusby 50 acres of land lying on the north side of Ann Arundel River near a creek called Ferry Creek when he comes to age 21, I also give 1 feather bed with furniture, 1 gun new stocked and also 1 pair of cullen stones. Also 2 cows, 1 calf 1 yearling heifer and 2 steers being marked (descrip. of cattle mark).
  • to my two sons Zachariah and Robert after the death of their mother my loving wife Dorothy Lusby this plantation I now live upon called Georgetown to be equally divided betweixt them both when they come to the age of 21 and after the death of their mother.
  • to Zachariah all the cattle under his care with his mark to be delivered when he comes to age 21 or is married and also 1 small gun.
  • to my son Robert Lusby 2 cows, one called Crumple and the other called Mopus them and their increase and also one small gun when the comes to age 21 or is married.
  • to my daughter Sarah Lusby 1 yearling heifer called Bess also 1 cow and calf and one 2 year-old heifer (with her cattle mark) when she comes to age or is married.
  • if any of the above said children shall die before they attain full age then an equal division of the legacy among the survivors.
  • after my debts and funeral charges I give my whole estate not formerly given to my wife Dorothy and appoint her and my son Jacob the executors of my will.

Signed and sealed with a cursive signature by Robert Lusby and witnessed by Philip Thomas Sr. and Richard Hill. Probated 26 FEB 1674. [3]
