Biography

Word was brought to Carlsbad, Saturday, of the death of Dolph Lusk, Friday, at his ranch home near Lovington, of heart failure. Particulars of his death were given The Argus by relatives, and are as follows:

Late in the afternoon of Friday, Mr. and Mrs. Lusk prepared to go to town for Sam Lusk, who is employed in a bank there, but because Dolph thought of something he wanted to do requested his wife to proceed without him, which she did, going direct to town and returning immediately, not having been absent from home over thirty minutes, the Lusk home being only about two miles west of Lovington. Returning, Mrs. Lusk not seeing her husband, went in search of him, and found his body lying in the doorway of the garage. The body was still warm, indicating that death had occurred only a few minutes before Mrs. Lusk's return to her home. With the assistance of Sam, the body of Dolph was taken to the house and a physician sent for but death had evidently been instantaneous.

The deceased had not been well since last January, when he was a victim of influenza, and was making preparations to spend the coming winter in California, intending leaving for Los Angeles the first of the week. However, his illness was not thought to be serious, and his death was a shock to his family and many friends.

The body was brought to Carlsbad, Monday, where it was interred in City cemetery with Odd Fellows ceremonies. Before bringing the body to Carlsbad, however, services were held at the home near Lovington, by Rev. Mr. Cunningham, a local minister. The services at Carlsbad were held from the Thorne undertaking parlors, and the remains were followed to the cemetery by a long line of automobiles bearing the family and friends. The pall bearers were Messrs. Marvin, Joe and Carl Livingston, Will Craig, Holly Benson and G.W. Williams.

Dolph Lusk was 37 years old to a day having been born in Hood County, Texas, September 19th, 1882, and came to Eddy county in 1885, where the family located and engaged in the stock business, the deceased having been one of the prominent stockmen of Eddy county, being one of six sons of V.H. Lusk, himself a stockman, who have grown to manhood in this community. The surviving family is a wife and two small children, a father, V.H. Lusk and five brothers, John, Joe, Bill, Sam and Aud. The two children are both boys, Virgil Witt, three years old, and Morgan Dolph, 1 1/2 years old.

The deceased was married to Miss Georgia Witt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Witt, on August 5, 1915.

Dolph Lusk was a man of the west, his life having been spent in the open, where nature brings to the surface those fine qualities of love for the beautiful and kindly feeling for all mankind as well as a charity as broad as the scope of his unobstruted vision. His heart was as big as his body and his kindly acts endeared him to every man, woman and child with whom he came in contact in daily life. His was a life of usefulness and it is indeed lamentable that it should come to a close just at it was broadening out into the full prerogatives of young manhood. His loss will be keenly felt by all, and the sympathies of the community in which he lived goes out to the bereaved widow and children and father and brothers. The Carlsbad Argus, Carlsbad, Eddy County, New Mexico, dated for Friday, September 26, 1919, front page. This newspaper back then just came out once a week.
