Lydia, daughter of the Revolutionary War soldier^[1] Abednego "Benjamin" Luther^[2] and Waite "Watey" Sheldon, was born 4 February 1791 in Johnston, Rhode Island.^[3] On 19 May 1816 in Scituate, Rhode Island,^[2] she married Dean Kimball. Together they had eight children.

• Amey Dexter (b. 1 August 1816^[4]; d. 26 February 1820 at age 18 months).^[4]

• Phebe Alvira (b. 9 January 1817;^[5] m. Isaac Johnson Kelton;^[6] d. 9 April 1892).^[5] Four children.

• Maria (b. 8 July 1820;^{[citation needed]} m. Joseph C. Potter;^[7] d. 27 March 1896).^{[citation needed]} Four children.

• Fenner (b. 6 October 1822;^[8] m. Adeline Allen;^[9] d. 6 March 1899).^[8] One son.

• Emeline (b. 2 September 1824;^[10] m. Job Johnson;^[10] d. 10 September 1864).^[10] One daughter.

In 1850, the family lived in Warwick, Rhode Island, where her husband (age 55) was a farmer on land valued at $1,200. The household also included Lydia (58), and their two youngest children Emery Sheldon (18, a painter) and Sarah Frances (15).^[18]
