George was born around 1822 [1] the third son of William Lutton and Mary Davidson.
In 1842 George along with his older brothers John and Robert emigrated to Australia on board the William Sharples. [2]
George (mother's father), therefore our grandfather. He was a rover, travelled to wherever there were gold diggings, went to California and then to New Zealand where he met Granny, married and settled there on the West Coast of South Island, Greymouth. They had 8 children, all born in N.Z. He later decided to come back to Australia. He was a blacksmith. He was in his early 70's when he died in 1892. I was about 3½ and can just remember him. - Jessie Moir
There is no evidence of when George went to California but Robert would have gone after 1848 so the assumption is that George went before him or with him. There is evidence of a G Lutton travelling on the Ellen Simpson from San Francisco to Sydney in 1854. [3]
Once again there is no evidence of when George landed in New Zealand but it would seem that he had been in the Greymouth area since 1867.[4]
George married Flora McLeod in 1872 [5] at the private home of Rev I.M. McIntosh in Greymouth.
Between them George and Flora had eight children.
