Colbert was born in born 1799 or 1800 (original headstone says "In his 69th year" and new headstone has 1800) in Lincoln County, Kentucky. He passed away on 15 September 1869 in Hardeman County, Tennessee and is buried in Luttrell Cemetery, Hardeman County.[1]
Colbert would have been listed on the 1820 census with his father in Lincoln County, Tennessee. He must have been the son on the census age 16-25.[2]
Colbert moved with his father Nathan and brother Nathan Junior to Current River Township, Lawrence County, Arkansas by 1830. The two Nathans were on the Arkansas Census from about 1828-1832 And both appear on the 1830 Federal Census in Lawrence County, as does Colbert. In Colbert's household on the 1830 census are himself, age 20-29, a wife also age 20-29, and one son and one daughter under age 5 – these would be James Colbert Luttrell born about 1822 (more likely birth year 1827) and Mary Ann Luttrell born 1829.
By 1837 Colbert had moved to Hardeman County, Tennessee and was apparently married to Violet Childers by this time. His son Milton was born in Tennessee in 1837 and the family appears on the census in 1840 in Hardeman County, Tennessee.[3] They remained in Hardeman County until Colbert's death in 1869 and Violet's death in 1880. They are both buried in the Luttrell Cemetery, Middleton, Hardeman County, Tennessee.
It has been suggested that Colbert was married twice, once in Alabama and once in Tennessee. This is based on the fact that four children: James Colbert Luttrell (born 1822), Mary Ann Luttrell (born 1829), John Luttrell (born 1832), and Nancy Luttrell (born 1834) were born in Alabama. The argument is that there must have been a marriage in Alabama. If this is the case, Colbert's first wife is unknown.
The birth places for the four oldest children may not be correct. We know Colbert was in Lincoln County, Tennessee in 1820, Lawrence County, Arkansas in 1830 and in Hardeman County Tennessee by 1840. If all four children were born in Alabama, Colbert must have gone to Alabama around 1822, to Arkansas by 1830, back to Alabama for a few years and then on to Tennessee by 1837. Birth locations for these children should be examined more closely; they may have been born in Arkansas rather than Alabama. (Note: 1870 census for Mary Ann (Luttrell) Barber gives her birth place as Arkansas.)
He married Violet Childers (or Childress) probably in Hardeman County, Tennessee. The marriage date is unknown. Assuming there was a first marriage and the four oldest children born in Alabama were from that marriage, Colbert and Violet must have married around 1836. The next child, Milton Jacob Luttrell, was born 12 October 1837 in Hardeman County, Tennessee.
