Biography

Robert was born on 20 November 1834 in Knox County, Tennessee. He was the son of John Luttrell and Clarissa Harlow White. He passed away on 8 April 1917^{[1] [2]} and is buried in Gillham Cemetery, Sevier County.^[3]

Marriage

Robert married Caroline McCloud on October 9, 1853 in Dekalb County, Alabama.^[4] Known children include:

Robert married second Laura Jane Baker] on July 7, 1872 in Texas County, Missouri.^[5] According to the 1900 census, Robert and Laura had no children. Several children linked to them based on the 1880 census belong to Robert's daughter, Mary Evalina Luttrell, and her husband John William McKeever (see Research Notes). Robert married third Malissa J. Guest on 22 April 1903 in Gillham, Sevier County, Arkansas.^[6]The couple had no children.

Research Notes

According to the 1900 census, Robert and second wife Laura Baker had no children. The mistake of ascribing children to the marriage stems from the transcription of the 1880 census, Dent County, Missouri.^[7] On page 11, lines 44-48 are Robert Lutrell, wife Laura, and children from first marriage to Caroline McCloud, Missouri, Robert, and Claiborn Luttrell. On page 11 lines 49-50 and page 12 lines 1-6 are John McKeever, Mary Shelton (boarder), John's wife Mary (Luttrell) McKeever, their children Sarah E., William, Thomas, and John McKeever, and John's mother Sarah (McKeever) Hazzel. The two families are listed in a single household. For some reason, the census transcriber thought, and recorded, that Sarah Hazzel was the mother of Robert Luttrell. Knowing Sarah was not Robert's mother, researchers assumed she must be Laura's mother. And the confusion began. The errors in the transcription also led to children of Robert's daughter Mary and her husband John W McKeever being ascribed to Robert and second wife Laura. They are erroneously listed with surname "Shelton" instead of "McKeever" due to transcriber simply copying the surname "Shelton" from a young girl listed as a Boarder. And subsequent researchers assumed they must be children of Robert and Laura. (Strutton-11 16:12, 9 February 2023 (UTC))

"....Now, my uncle Vernon told his daughter, Norma Luttrell that his grandfather, Robert G. Luttrell, rode with Quantrill's Raiders and that is why he moved to Arkansas. My uncle Vernon said that Robert G. Luttrell was a mean bastard....Vernon was the son of Robert (Hut) Luttrell and Lela Johnson - Hut being the son of Robert G. Luttrell."

Robert died from an intestinal obstruction.
