Biography

Emily, Emmeline, or Emma was born about 1926 - 1928 (possibly in May, or her middle name may have been May). She is the daughter of Henry Luttrell and Vina or Vinia Green. She probably lived for four days.

In the 1990s, my grandmother, Eulah Evelyn (Luttrell) Brown, showed me a hand-written list of her siblings. At the time, I assumed that it was in my great-grandmother's handwriting, however, I subsequently learned that she told Charity Rolfes that she had asked a lady to write down the names and dates of her siblings who had died. (This probably happened at an annual grave decoration in Casey County, Kentucky.) I saw this list twice, and my grandmother and I discussed it. Since her death, I have been unable to find the list. I know that it had the names of six children, even though it should have included only four.

The second time I saw the list, I noticed that one of the children was born after my grandmother, who was born in 1923. I asked, "Grandma, one of them was born after you were. Do you remember her?"

She said, "Yes, I remember." She told me about what it was like to wait for the new baby, and about finally getting to see her new baby sister. "But then, she died." I remember how calm and sad she sounded when she said this.

Unfortunately, since my grandmother's death, no one has been able to locate this paper. There is a letter from my great-grandmother telling her life story, and it says that she had six children, and all of them died except for two (my grandmother and her younger half-sister). It also stated that all but one of her children were girls. This did not line up with my memory of Homer and Monty from the list. Unfortunately, she only listed the names of her children that did not die in infancy in the letter, but made references to the ones that died in infancy as well.

The list, as best I can reconstruct it:

Stanley L. Luttrell December 7 - December 24, 1917
Fannie M. Luttrell November 7 - November 13, 1918
[Homer or Monty] Luttrell November 7, 1919 - November 13, 1918
[Homer or Monty] Luttrell [date] - [date]
Edna Hazel Luttrell September 13, 1920 - June 11, 1929
[Emmeline or Emily or Emma Lee] Luttrell [Month (May?), date] - [Month (May?), date] 192? (four days)

I think that the list included two additional sons, Homer and Monty, born between Fannie and Eulah. I remember thinking that one of them lived almost a year, and they must have thought that he was going to make it. I remember being surprised that two of them had lived for so long, because I had thought that Eulah and Edna were the only children of Henry and Vina who didn't die as newborns. These two children were clearly listed only because the lady who wrote out the list was using local records available in Casey County, Kentucky, and the local records contained so many errors on Fannie's death certificate, and it was so difficult to read her name, that she somehow became four different children in the records: Fannie/Fanie M., Horme, Monne, and Flonne.

I have added these two baby boys to this list, but have not created profiles, because I am certain that they were on the list in error.

I hope to someday find the list, perhaps stuck in a book, and/or locate some documentation for this youngest child of Henry and Vina. She probably was born and died in Casey County, Kentucky, though it is possible that she might have been born out of state, while visiting relatives (her mother was born in Illinois, and also had family in Indiana, including her father and her half-siblings).

There is one possibility that can be documented but has not been ruled out, a Luttrell infant girl who died in Casey County, Kentucky at about the right time.

She is not Colene, who was born and died in 1927, and is buried in Birdie Russell Cemetery, Windsor, Casey County, Kentucky. It seemed quite likely that she was, until an opportunity for a cemetery visit revealed that she was not the daughter of Henry and Vina, which in a way was not surprising, because of my strong memory of her birth and death in May, 1926. There are no records anywhere of Colene, aside from Find a Grave and the list of interments from the Kentucky Kin Folk web site (which I believe are probably headstone inscriptions, rather than a complete list of interments). I would have been surprised if I gotten the name, month, and year that wrong, but would have been happy to have identified this missing relative. Colene's information will be left here until I have a chance to create her profile.

She may have also been born with congenital debility, which was her brother Stanley's official cause of death (see Stanley's profile for more information about congenital debility). Like her brother Stanley and sister Fannie, who also died in infancy, she would not eat. It is also possible, based on her symptoms and the blood types of her surviving female relatives, that she had Rh Disease, possibly in combination with congenital debility. See the profiles for Stanley and Fannie for more information.

She was definitely not the Eveline in the Kentucky Vital Record Indexes, 1911-1999) below, however, at one time I thought she might be, and I am leaving the information here until I can make profiles for her and her parents.

Finally, there is a lead on finding cemetery records for South Fork Ridge Cemetery, where Emily or Emmeline's father and her sisters Edna and Eulah are buried. It is possible that the person who provided these records to Eulah got those records from the person in charge of maintaining the cemetery, and I finally found contact information for that person. It seems very likely that Emily or Emmeline is in the same plot with Henry and Edna.
