John Luttrell was born on April 22, 1764 in Amherst County , VA. His parents were Richard Luttrell and Sarah Churchwell. He died on August 29, 1846 in Knoxville, Knox, TN
John married Annis Jackson, daughter of Peter Jackson, on August 12, 1789 Together they had 9 children. The first three of their nine children were born in Amherst Co. Virginia before the family moved to Knox Co. Tennessee. In 1796 the family moved to Knox Co and purchased a farm near the fork of the French Broad and Holston Rivers, just east of Knoxville. They remained there for the remainder of their lives. The six children born in Knox County were Elizabeth, Twins John and Mary 1801, Peter, James and William.:
John and Annis Luttrell were members of the Methodist Church. John Luttrell is named as one of the trustees of the Macedonia Church which was built in 1809 and was the first Methodist Church to be built in the vicinity of Knoxville. Methodism itself was relatively new in the US, the first of John Wesley's assistants having been sent from England to America in 1766.
John Luttrell died at his home east of Knoxville at the age of 82 in 1846. In July 1854, Annis Luttrell applied for and received the one-third dower of John Luttrell's lands to which she was entitled as his widow.[1]
