Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Richard Luttrell Jr. was a Virginia colonist.

Richard was born about 1728 in Stafford County, Virginia Colony. He was the son of Richard Luttrell and Mary Dermont. He passed away about April 1821 in Culpepper County, Virginia. (His will was dated 24 April 1819 and proved 21 May 1821 in Culpepper County.)

Birth

Richard was born before February 1730. He was named in the will of his grandfather, Michael Dermont, dated 3 February 1730. Michael Dermont named the four children then living of Richard Luttrell -- Catherine, James, Richard, and Michael Litteral -- as default heirs in the event his own two children, Michael and Catherine Dermont, died without heirs.[1]

From other evidence Michael was the oldest of the four, born about 1720. Catherine appears next in birth order. The next child born to Richard Luttrell after the four was John L. Luttrell, born after February in 1730. Estimated birth dates for the four named are: Michael, b 1720, Catherine, b 1724, James, b 1726, and Richard, b 1728.

Marriage

Richard married Rachel Stallard about 1784 probably in Culpeper County, Virginia. Rachel was born in Essex County, Virginia Colony but moved with her parents to Culpeper County. That is where she and Richard probably met and married. Richard was about 56 years old at marriage which seems a little late. It almost appears as if he had been married before. No evidence has been found for an earlier marriage, although some suggest he was married to a Sarah Watson. Richard and Rachel had six children born between 1785 and 1800; all named in his will.

Timeline

1766 Richard is named in the will of his father dated 27 September 1764 and proved 26 May 1766 in Fauquier County.[2]

ITEM I give to my son Richard Luttrell my new patent of land containing 58 acres of land whereon he now lives.

This 58-acre tract was obtained by Richard Luttrell, Sr., by grant from the Proprietors of the Northern Neck on 7 July 1745; adjoining the "said Lutterall's other land on a drain of Town Run."[3] Richard, Sr. had a practice of giving parcels of his land to his sons for them to establish their own plantations, then confirming title to the land in his will. The same thing was done for his sons Michael, John, Samuel, and James.
1770 Richard is listed on the Fauquier County, Virginia, Rent Rolls with 58 acres.[4]
1810 Richard is listed on the 1810 Federal Census dated 6 August 1810, in Culpeper, Culpeper County, Virginia. In his household are himself and his wife, both over 45 years old; two sons and two daughters, age 10-15.[5]
1821 Richard's will dated 24 April 1819 is submitted for probate in Culpeper County on 21 May 1821.[6] In his will Richard names "Rachel, my dearly beloved wife;" children Willis, James, Susannah, Fanny, Burrell, and Elizabeth wife of Thomas Stallard. Wife Rachel and friends Henry Basge and Thomas G. Kemper are named executors.
