Biography

Martha was born about 1828 in Lincoln County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of Vincent Luttrell and Sarah Benson.

Marriage

Martha married William C. Fanning on 12 July 1848 in Lincoln County, Tennessee.[1] Five children are attributed to William and Martha: Willis A., b July 1850; Sarah J., b February 1856; Henry N., b September 1859 or 1860; Martha "Mattie," b March 1863; Francis Marion, b May 1865.

There may be problems with these children. No birth records have been found for any of them. Census and death records were examined to determine birth dates and parentage.

  1. Willis Andrew Fanning was born July 1850 based on 1900 census record. California Death Index gives death date 3 February 1910. Parents names not included. He is on the 1860 census with William and Martha. He married in 1869.
  2. Sarah Jane (Fanning) Reynolds was born February 1856 based on 1900 census record. Tennessee Death Certificate #597 gives death date 6 January 1926; Father: Bill Fanning; Mother: Unknown. She is not with William and Martha on the 1860 census and has not been found elsewhere in 1860 under any variant spelling of the Fanning name. In 1870 she is on the census, age 14, with William and second wife, Frances Taylor.
  3. Henry Napoleon Fanning was born in September 1858, 1859 or 1861: 1900 census says Sept. 1861; Texas Death Certificate #12567 says September 1858; Find A Grave photo of gravestone has 18 Sept. 1859. Death Certificate has Father: W C Fanning; Mother: Unknown. He is not on the 1860 census with William and Martha and is not found elsewhere. He is listed with William and Frances in 1870, age 10. Probable birth date September 1859; he would be 11 years old in September 1870.
  4. Martha "Mattie" Ann (Fanning) Fletcher was born 12 March 1863 based on Find A Grave photo of gravestone, Tennessee Death Certificate #9629, and 1900 census record. (For once they all agree!) Death Certificate has parents, Father: Bill Fanning; Mother: Unknown. Martha is on the 1870 census with William and Frances.
  5. Francis Marion Fanning was born 9 May 1865. Texas Death Certificate #32753 has birth date 9 May, no year, age 52 at death in November 1917; calculated birth year 1865. 1900 census record has May 1865. Death Certificate has parents, Father: W. C. Fanning, Mother: Francis Taylor. He is on the 1870 census with William and Frances.

William Fanning married second Frances Taylor on 15 February 1867 in Franklin County, Tennessee.[2] The 1900 census states William and Frances had been married 50 [sic] years; Frances had borne 12 children and 4 were living. She was born September 1833; age 34 at marriage. According to one family tree I found, she may have been married to a Joseph Taylor, so Taylor could have been her married name. In 1860 she is in the household of William and Martha Fanning as a domestic servant, age 26. The only child in the household is Willis A. Fanning.

Death

Martha passed away after 1860 in Franklin County, Tennessee; no death record or burial site has been found. Most family trees give August 1866 as death date, but no evidence in support of that date. She is last found on record on the 1860 Federal Census in Franklin County, Tennessee.

In the household are William, age 34, farmer; Martha, age 34; Willis A., age 11; Francis Taylor, age 26, domestic; Elijah Moore, 25, Farmhand; R. Binum, 21, Farmhand.
