Biography

Rodham Luttrell (aka Rhodeham, Roadham, Rhodam, Rhodham) was born between 1785-1787 in Virginia. He is believed to be the oldest child of Nathaniel Luttrell Sr. and Priscella Ann Shelton although proof is lacking.

He married Matilda Horton (1790-) circa 1815 most probably in Kentucky where his 9 children are born (all born in Casey County, Kentucky, likely in town of Liberty).

Their children:

  1. Richard Riney Luttrell (1818-) b Casey Co., Kentucky, married Nancy Jane Russell (1823-) on 4 February 1840 in Casey Co., Kentucky, at least 9 children
  2. Priscilla LUTTRELL b: 1820 in Casey Co., Kentucky
  3. Winston LUTTRELL b: 1825 in Casey Co., Kentucky
  4. John Harlan LUTTRELL b: March 1826 in Casey Co., Kentucky
  5. William LUTTRELL b: 1828 in Casey Co., Kentucky
  6. Caleb LUTTRELL b: 1832 in Casey Co., Kentucky, m. Malinda Meek 26 December 1853.
  7. Pleasant Luttrell/changed to Luttrull (8 April 1836-1926) b Casey Co., Kentucky, d Winslow, Pike Co., Indiana, Pvt Company D, 22nd Regiment, Indiana Infantry, Civil War Veteran, married Surrepla Susan "Susan" Delk (1838-1916) in December 1858 in Casey Co., Kentucky, at least 5 children
  8. James LUTTRELL b: 1838 in Casey Co., Kentucky.
  9. David T. Luttrell/changed to Luttrull (1843-1895) b Casey Co., Kentucky, d Pike Co., Indiana, married Elizabeth G. Lucas (1843-1899) on 22 January 1863 in Casey Co., Kentucky, 10 children.

1840 US Census: Rodham Luttrell had 7 children, 6 mules, no slaves (from Charles McHaffe)

Rodham Luttrell's FATHER: Nathan Luttrell (born 1747 in Prince William County, Virginia Colony (now Fauquier County as of 1759), died 1840)
evidently married both sisters:
1st wife Priscilla Ann Shelton (born 1765 in Virginia Colony, died after 1830) in Virginia Colony in 1780 or 1785,
2nd wife Nancy Sarah Shelton (born 1760 in Virginia Colony, died after 1850) (marriage date not known, after 1830).

NOTE: Some sources indicate Nathan Luttrell had only one wife, Priscilla Ann Shelton, and that Nancy Sarah Shelton never existed.

There is no evidence that James Shelton had a daughter named Nancy Sarah Shelton. James Shelton died intestate in Lincoln Co., Tennessee in 1815. The probate records in 1816 record the heirs of James who received shares of his land. Sons were: Peter Shelton, heirs of Vardaman Shelton (including Vardaman’s widow, Priscilla), Haman, and James Jr. Daughters named were: Letty (or Lettice) Shelton Duncan, wife of Charles, Melinda Shelton Hudson, wife of Benjamin, Susanna Shelton Luttrell, wife of Michael, Priscilla Shelton Luttrell, wife of Nathan. Children attributed to James and Susanna but not named in the distribution were Clary Shelton, wife of Jesse Luttrell, and Jarman (German) Shelton. (Strutton-11 15:03, 13 May 2019 (UTC))

Death

This profile shows that Rodham Luttrell likely died after 1870 in Pike County, Indiana, but source not yet found. [See census records below.]

Alternatively, Sutton records show a Rodham Luttrell who died of a kidney complaint in Casey County, Kentucky on 22 June 1878, at the age of 66. It shows that he was born in and died in Casey County, and was a resident of the county at the time of his death. The record showed that he was married (rather than widowed), and that his parents, Richard Richard C. Luttrell and Fannie Luttrell Debra Frances Heflin, were both born in Virginia.

Although he died after 1870, it seems that this is likely the death record of a different Rodham Luttrell, because if he was 66 in 1878, he would have been born in about 1812. Also, his parents were supposedly Nathan and Priscilla, not Richard and Fannie, and he was supposedly born in Virginia, not in Casey County, Kentucky. He could not be a grandson, and Rodham didn't have a son named after himself. Perhaps a nephew or cousin? He could be the son of Richard Luttrell.

[This Rodham Luttrell who died in Casey County, Kentucky is a different person, not the son of Nathan Luttrell and Priscilla Shelton. See census records below. Strutton-11 16:42, 13 May 2019 (UTC) ]
