Memories

Memories of Suzanne Mackler[3]

Mary was a little over five feet tall and had blue eyes and long red hair. She was on the immigrant ship S.S. Freidrich der Grosse that landed at Ellis Island on 11 May 1904. According to her daughter Katherine, she had dreamed of coming to the US and this was the dream come true.

When she arrived in Loveland, Colorado, she went to work as a practical nurse. A local doctor would call her to take care of his patients. She particularly enjoyed working with new mothers.

George and Mary rented a house at first, then he bought land and built them a brand new house. They were charter members of a new Lutheran church in Loveland. They attended night school to learn English. They insisted that their children speak English at home.

George and Mary had ten children. Those who reached adulthood were Katherine, Edith, Joe, Elvina, Esther and Clara. Two were buried in Russia, Margaret and Anna Marie, and had died of Scarlet Fever. Two are buried in Brush at Hillrose.

Mary's death certificate lists her cause of death as dropsy.
