Johannes Hendrik Lux (1787-1865) was a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Dutch Army and commander of an artillery battalion at the Battle of Waterloo.
Birth
Johannes Hendrik was born before the 12th of February, 1787, in the Hague, Netherlands. He was the son of Johann Hendrik Lux and Juliana Dorothea Seijfferth. [1]
Marriage and Children
He is known to have married Henriette Marie Wipperman, whose parents were Herman Coenraad Wipperman and Henriette Marie Grozieux. [2] before 1812. Their children included:
Annette Wilhelmina Lux, b. about 1812; d. 21 Sep 1815 [3]
Juliana Wilhelmina Lux, b. unknown, d. 2 Feb 1885 [9]
Military Career
Johannes Hendrik Lux's career in the military began on either the 30th of October, 1798, or the 18th of December, 1799, when he enrolled as a Cadet and Volunteer in the 2nd Artillery Battalion. He was only 12 at the time![10]
He became a cannoneer in August of 1800, and transferred as a Cadet Eleve(?) to the Cannoneers in November of 1801.
The next entry refers to a withholding of a promotion until he was 16? not sure what the Dutch says.
Johannes is recorded as having much talent, but loose, and advancing well with a good conduct. This provides an insight as to why he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd Artillery Battalion in June 1805. [11]
From 1805 to 1809 Lux was stationed at Goedereede, on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee in Zeeland. During his time in Zeeland, he was promoted to the rank of 1st Lieutenant on the 8th of August, 1808, and a year later made magazine master of the Artillery, 2nd Class, at Brielle.
Lux was also the commander at the Conquest of Brielle, 1813, and he received a medal for it. [10]
In February of 1814 he was made Captain of the Mounted Artillery.
About a year later (Jan 1815) he was transferred to the foot artillery.
Lux also took part in the famous Battle of Waterloo, 18 June 1815, where he captained the Belgian foot battery in Chassé's 3rd Netherlands infantry Division, commanding 121 men, 6 6-pounder cannons, and 2 5.5' howitzers. [12]
Johannes received 2,168 francs (1,024 guilders) as a gratuity for his service at Waterloo.[13]
In January of 1830, Lux was transferred to the 6th Artillery Battalion of the National Militia, and in 1833 he was appointed Major and Artillery Commander in Brielle.[14][15]
In 1830-1831 and 1832-1833, Lux served at the capture of Bergen-op-Zoom. For this he also received the Metal Cross (Metalen Kruis) in March of 1832. In 1833-1834 he was again at the capture of Brielle.
In December of 1837, after around 40 years of service for his country, Lux was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel. [10]
