JEAN (or JAN) II D'AVESNES, Count of Hainault, Holland, and Zeeland, lord of Friesland, son and heir, born about 1247. He married about 1270 PHILIPPE (or PHILIPPINE) OF LUXEMBOURG, daughter of Henri V, Count of Luxembourg and La Roche, Marquis of Arlon, by Marguerite, daughter of Henri II, Count of Bar-Le-Duc [see BAR 7 for her ancestry]. They had five sons, Jean (or Jan), Henri (or Hendrik) [canon of Cambrai], Guillaume (or Willem) (III) [Count of Hainault, Holland, and Zeeland], Jean (or Jan) [seigneur of Beaumont], and Waleran, and five daughters, Marguerite (or Margaretha) (wife of Robert II, Count of Artois), Alice (or Alix), Isabelle (wife of Raoul de Clermont, seigneur of Nesle, Constable of France), Jeanne (or Johanna) (nun at Fontenelles), and Marie (wife of Louis I, Duke of Bourbon). .... JEAN II D'AVESNES, Count of Hainault, Holland, and Zeeland, lord of Friesland, died 11 Sept. 1304. He left a testament dated 8 Sept. 1304. His widow, Philippe, was an executrix of the will of her daughter, Isabelle de Clermont, lady of Nesle, Philippe, Countess of Hainault, etc., died 6 April 1311. Jean and his wife, Philippe, were buried in the church of the Franciscans in Valenciennes.

Philippa of Luxembourg (1252 ? 6 April 1311) was the daughter of Count Henry V of Luxembourg and his wife Marguerite of Bar. She married John II, Count of Holland. Two of her grand-daughters were Philippa of Hainault, Queen Consort of England, and Margaret II Countess of Hainault in her own right and wife of Holy Roman Emperor Louis IV.
