Biography

Margaret Lygon was the daughter of William Lygon, Esq. and Eleanor Dennis.[1][2] Her parents were married by contract dated 1529 and had eleven children before William died in 1567.[1] Margaret was their eldest daughter,[3] her date and place of birth are unknown and are estimated.

She married first Thomas Russell, Knt., of Strensham, Worcestershire[1] as his second wife.[2][4] The date and place of their marriage is unknown. They had one son:

Her husband, Sir Thomas Russell, died in 1574.[4]

Margaret married second Henry Berkeley, Knt., of Bruton Somerset,[1][5] son of Sir Maurice Berkeley by his first wife.[6] They had issue (only the first son is named by Richardson):

  • Maurice, Knt.,[6] married Elizabeth Killigrew,[2][5] he was born about 1577 and died 15 January 1617[1][7] or 1 May 1617[8]
  • Henry, Knt., married Elizabeth Neville,[2][5][7] born c1579, died before 27 September 1667[9]
  • Edward, Knt., married Margaret Holland and had issue;[5] he died before 2 March 1654/5[2][7][9]
  • Margaret, wife of Sir [Lewis] Pollard, Bt.,[2][7] she died before 20 November 1657, leaving issue[9]
Possible son, not named in Visitations (see research notes on Henry Berkeley's profile):
  • Charles, Knt.,[2][7] probably died before 1600 (not named in fathers will)

Sir Henry Berkeley died 7 September 1601.[6] Elizabeth survived him, dying in 1617,[2] and was buried at Bruton 27 February 1616/7, where her husband was buried 1 October 1601.[9]

The will of Henry Berkeley dated 30 May 1600 and proved 21 October 1601 named his wife, Dame Margaret Berkeley as executrix, second son Henry, third son Edward, and elder son Maurice.[2]

The will of Margaret Berkeley dated 9 February 1616/7 and proved 28 June 1617 named son Maurice and his wife Elizabeth; son Thomas Russell; sons Henry and Edward Berkeley, executors and residuary legatees; daughter Margaret Pollard, wife of Lewis Pollard, and their daughter Elizabeth; her sister Catherine Folliott, wife of Thomas Folliott; niece Catherine Gerrard, wife of Robert Gerrard; nephew Hugh Lygon, son of Hugh; and several others including, servants, doctors, and the poor of the town.[2]

Just a reminder that copying and pasting lengthy passages of text from other sources not only can violate copyright protections, it is also contrary to WT policy and the guidelines used by the Magna Carta Project for profiles which it manages (see mcp checklist here). It is just as much of a copyright infringement when done in the comments section as when done in a biography, and all comments consisting largely of sections cut and paste from other publications will be archived. Please instead just share a link to any relevant material which you have been able to find, and provide a brief summary. Thanks, everyone, for your understanding. A link to the full text of Margaret's will already appears in her profile above.

Jen, you are absolutely correct about copying and pasting lengthy passages from sources that one is going to use as a source in The Magna Carta Project.

There are ways around other sources working with other Projects without violating copy infringements. Write the knowledgeable facts by writing everything in your own words and keep in mind copyright infringements or plagiarism in other Projects one is working on. Always be cautious in whatever you write in any profile.

Bio says they married in the Berkeley manor at Bruton, Gloucestershire. There is no Bruton in Gloucestershire. Bruton is in Somerset.
