Dame Dr Mary Ranken Lyle DBE, CStJ was born on 31st March 1895 at Carlton, Victoria, Australia. She was a daughter of Thomas Lyle and Frances Millear.
She married barrister, Major (later Lieutenant General Sir) Edmund Herring DSO MC, on 6th April 1922 in the Presbyterian Church, Toorak, Victoria.[1] Daughters are Mary, Judith, and Margaret.
Whilst Mary's husband continued onto greater and distinguished things, she herself continued to develop her interest in women's health. Mary would eventually be appointed Commander of the Order of St John in 1953 and Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1960.[2]
She passed away on 26th October 1981 at Camberwell, Victoria; just ten weeks before her equally distinguished husband. The Mary Herring Hall and scholarship at Toorak College commemorate her service.
