Biography

Lucy was born on 20 Oct 1748 and died on 15 Feb 1832 according to her grave marker in Fairview Cemetery in Perry County Alabama [1]. She was the daughter of Williamson Lyles and Joyce Goree. [1]

She was first married to Colonel James Lyles [1745-1799] about 1776 who fought in the Revolutionary War and was a kinsman of her father. They had three daughters: Ruth Lyles [1777-]; Nancy Lyles [1778-]; and Elizabeth Lyles [1780-1865].

She married John Goree Jr. second as a widow in 1780 in Ninety -Six District, South Carolina. Her children with John Goree Jr. were: Joseph Goree [1782-1816]; James Lyles Goree [1783-1841]; Lucy Goree 1791-1873]; Dr. Langston James Goree [1793-1853]; Sarah Goree [1795-1870]; and Mary Lou "Polly" Goree [1797-1883].

"Col James Lyles was an inhabitant of the Fork, between Enoree and Tiger. He was, I have no doubt in General Williamson's expedition against the Indians, in 1776, although in the memoir of Maj. McJunkin, published in the Magnolia, the Col. Lyles engaged in that duty is called John, yet I think it pretty clear that Col. James Lyles was thereby intended. He was also in the affair at Hanging Rock, 7 Aug 1780. I presume he was at Blackstocks, as he was a part of Sumpter's command. Whether he was at King's Mountain in October '80; at the Cowpens in January 1781, and at the seige of Ninety-Six, I have no means of knowing. He returned to his family after the capture of Fort Granby on the 14th day of May, 1781, and died leaving a family of three daughters, on of whom, Mrs. Elizabeth Maybin, the wife of Col. Benjamin Maybin survives." [2]

Lucy Gorie is mentioned in her father's will [Williamson Liles], and left 4 slaves to divide with her sisters Sabra and Drucilla. [3]. Her siblings are also listed in the will: Sabra Lyles [Vardemon]; Rebecca Lyles [Goree]; Drucilla Lyles [Dawkins]; Henry Lyles; Marcus Lyles; and Mrs. Qualman Lyles. Williamson Lyles was also married to a first wife whose name we do not know. They had Ephraim Lyles "Little Eph" and Williamson Lyles Jr. Lucy was not mentioned in her mother's will as Joice died in 1834 and Lucy died in 1832.[2]

Lyles-745 is for Mona Nadine Lyles who is not Lucy.
Lyles-745 and Lyles-153 appear to represent the same person because: Death counties differ, otherwise a good match.
