On the 1920 Census, she was 7 years old and lived with her parents and siblings on Brim Road in Yadkin Township, Stokes County, NC. She had attended school and was able to read but not write.[1]
She attended elementary school at the Volunteer School in Stokes County, NC. The school was restored in 2021 by her neice, Avolene Badgett. Bessie and her siblings were honored at the "grand opening", and there pictures are on the wall in the school house.
On the 1930 Census, she was 18 years old and lived with her parents and siblings on Flat Rock Road in Yadkin Township, Stokes County, NC. She was able to read and write.[2]
In 1934, when Viola was born, they were living in Pilot Mountain, Surry County, North Carolina.[4]
When Junior was born in 1936, they were living in Guilford County, NC.[5]
In 1937, Troy was employeed as a laborer at WCUNC (Women's College of the University of North Carolina, now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG)). Their residential address is not listed.[6]
When Louise was born in 1939, they were living in Guilford Coiunty, NC.[7]
On the 1940 Census, she was 25 years old and lived with her husband and children in Rock Creek Township, Guilford County, North Carolina.[8] On 16 Oct 1940, Troy registered for the World War II draft. They were living in Whitsett, Guilford County, NC at the time. It's believed by the family that they lived on Judge Adams Road on Rock Creek Dairy land.
In 1941, Coy was born in Guilford County. It is not known if the family was living in Whitsett or Guilford College (town) at the time.[9]
In 1943, the famiy was living in the town of Guilford College, NC, now part of Greensboro.[10]
Troy and Bessie Doby 1945
By 1945, when Paul was born, the family had moved back to Stokes County. They lived in King off Trinity Church Road.[11]
Between 1945 and 1949, Troy became employed by Ingle's Dairy, located on modern-day Elmdale Road, Burlington, NC. The family lived on the farm. Troy's nephew, Frank Doby (Marley's son), remembers this: "They lived and worked on the Ingle's Dairy. That was my first memory. I can still Viola and Louise running all over the place wearing long dresses and barefoot. Uncle Troy's family were half wild, fun loving, and always happy. I don’t know what work they did there just that they lived there in a unpainted two story house."[12]
By 1949, Bessie and family had moved to Guilford Dairy in Greensboro, NC. James was born there.[13][14]
Around 1950, the family moved to 1430 Rock Creek Dairy Road, Whitsett, NC, when he lived until he passed away. By 1953, the family had started regularly attending nearby Rock Creek Baptist Church.

In 1956 some members of Rock Creek Baptist Church wanted to move closer to the new interstate (I-85), to attract more members. The vote did not pass, so some of the families split off and formed Whitsett Baptist Church (now First Baptist of Whitsett).[15] She was a charter/founding member and was lovingly known as "Miss Bessie" and "Grandma Bessie". During her many decades at the church, she was a chior member and Sunday School teacher. She was awarded 25 years of perfect attendance. Troy was pastor of Johnson Baptist Church from 1965 to 1969, but after his time there was complete, they returned to Whitsett Baptist Church.[16]

On 25 Nov 1983 the family, along with a large group of friends and church members joined Troy and Bessie to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. The reception was held at the Whitsett Community Center (now Whitsett Town Hall).

She passed away on 1 Mar 2003 at Twin Lakes Community in Burlington, Alamance, NC.[17] She was buried at Alamance Memorial Park in Burlington.[18] Bessie had 6 children, 11 living grandchildren, and 16 living great-grandchildren when she died.

Mrs. Bessie Lynch Doby, 91, formerly of 1430 Rock Creek Diary Road, died Saturday March 1, 2003 at Twin Lakes Center.
The funeral services will be held on Mondy March 3, 2003 at 3pm by Rev. Tim Stevens at First Baptist Church of Whitsett. The burial will follow in Alamance Memorial Park.
She was a native of Stokes County and the daughter of the late Drew William Lynch and the late Martha Martin Lynch. Her husband was the late Rev. Troy Lee Doby Sr.
Mrs Doby was a home maker and a charter member of Whitsett Baptist Church. She was very active in all areas of the church for many years. She was an avid gardener and loved growing flowers.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law Mrs. Viola Whitesell and her husband Gaynor of Gibsonville, and Mrs. Louise Capps and her husband Archie of Graham, sons and daughters-in-law Troy Doby Jr. and his wife Linda of Whitsett, Coy Doby and his wife Brenda of Burlington, Paul Doby and his wife Joy of Gibsonville, and James Doby and his wife Becky of Liberty, sisters Miss Lillian Doby of Graham, Mrs. Ola Gordon and Mrs. Lula Stewart both of King, Mrs. Ada Rich of Graham, and Mrs. Ethel Smith of Pinnacle, brother Fount Lynch of Blues Creek, grandchildren Ronnie Whitesell, Kendall Whitesell, Brian Doby, Mark Doby, Amy Capps Cloer, Allan Capps, Keith Doby, Shannon Wagoner, Sherry Gregory, Teresa Treadway, and Heather Doby, great grandchildren Alan Whitesell, Lisa Whitesell, Troy Whitesell, Michala Doby, Alexis Doby, Cassidy Cloer, Austin Cloer, Jessica Doby, Adrian Doby, Ashley Pilgrim, Kasey Wagoner, Justin Treadway, and Joshua Treadway.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brothers Willie, Charlie, Jessie, and Albert Lynch.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 pm on Sunday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory Inc. Other times the family will be at the home of the son Troy Doby Jr., 548 NC 100, Whitsett.
