Railroad worker, built Tunnel. Settled near Albany NY. (Side note reads Delmar.) Tunnel is in the town of Colesville, in Broome County NY. The railroad tunnel for which Tunnel is named is 5/8 of a mile in length. It was built for the Albany and Susquehanna Railroad and is one of the oldest RR tunnels in the nation. When it was first built, it didn't have a vent shaft. The fumes that built up would make workers as well as passengers ill, so a crew from Wilks-Barre PA was brought in (1908) to build a shaft, they worked for the Isaac's company.
In 1890, right after the tunnel was finished, the Erie railroad tried to take it over. They sent a large group of men up from Binghamton, Albany heard about it and sent their own contigent of men to meet them. As both trains approached each other, just outside of the tunnel, neither train would back off. They collided, the Erie train was derailed, and 1200 men jumped out a prceded to fight. Albany retained ownership of the tunnel, which was leased in perpetuity to Delaware and Hudson Railroad in 1907. ("A History of Colesville 1785-1978" by R. Leone Jacob 1978).
