Biography

Mary Lynch was born in 1818 in Julianstown, Meath, Ireland.[1] Her parents were possibly William Lynch and Mary Callaghan. She was possibly baptized in Ardcath and Clonalvy Parish, Meath, Ireland, a town near Julianstown.[2]

Mary married Patrick Sheridan on January 1, 1837, in Drogheda, Louth, Ireland.[1]

Patrick and Mary had nine children in 26 years, with four born in Meath County. All four children were baptized in the Catholic Church before the family left Ireland about 1845 during the great potato famine.

Mary was age 19 when their first son John was born in 1837 in Mornington, Meath, Ireland. [3] The family moved nearby to Laytown, a coastal village, where three children were born: Mary (1839),[4] [5] James (1842) [6]and Ann (1844).[1] [7]

Moving to Follow the Railway

Before 1848, Patrick moved the family to the coal town Wigan, Lancashire, England, where daughter Catherine was born that year.[1] Patrick likely was following the railway, and may have found work in one of the many collieries supporting coal production for the railway.

Before March 1851, the family moved to Glyncorrwg, Glamorgan, Wales, where Patrick worked as a railway laborer and headed the household at 43 Dingle house, while Mary kept house for the family of 7. Son Francis was born here in June 1851.[1] [8]

Before 1861, the family moved to St Helens, Prescot, Lancashire, England, where son Joseph was born that year.[1] [9] St Helens was said to be built on coal and was served by the Liverpool and Manchester railway and shares a border with Wigan where the family had previously lived.

In 1864, Patrick and Mary's youngest and ninth child Agnes was born in St Helens when Mary was age 46. Mary stated she could not read or write when she registered the birth as 17 Jun 1864 for "Agnes Sherridan," presumably during Patrick's absence.[10][11] It is likely that Agnes was actually born on 17 February 1864, as reflected in family records,[1] but that Mary changed the date to June to avoid the penalty for reporting a birth late.

Move to the US

About the time of Agnes' birth, Patrick left for the United States, leaving Mary to raise the children for a time.

In August 1865 Mary and most of her children departed on the Ship American Union from London, arriving in New York 10 days later to join Patrick. the ages of the children reported on the ship manifest had many errors, possibly due to Mary's illiteracy.

Only son James settled in New York City, while the rest of the family went with Patrick and Mary to South Boston. Before 1870, Patrick and Mary and their youngest three children, Thomas, Joseph and Agnes, lived in South Boston, where Patrick, age 50 was a laborer. [12]

In October 1871, Patrick became a US citizen in US Circuit Court, stating he was age 56, of Boston, an "engineer," and born in ""County Louth, Ireland." He signed his name as "Patrick Sherridan." In the US, the family spelled their name "Sheridan" in all other records.[13]

Marriages and Grandchildren

Some of Patrick and Mary's children married and had children of their own:

  • John married Isabella Halliday in 1869 in Boston. Only one of their 6 children survived childhood.[14]
  • Ann married James Riley in 1870 in Malden. Five of their eight children survived childhood.[15]
  • James married Susan Flanagan in 1871 in NY. They had 3 children, but only 2 survived infancy.[16]
  • Frank married Bridget McGee in 1872 in Malden. Only one of their children survived childhood.[17]
  • Thomas married Mary Kennedy in 1878 in Boston. Three of their five children died in infancy.[18]
  • Mary, Catherine, Joseph and Agnes never married.

Many Funerals and Burials (1870-1892)

Patrick bought a family burial plot in Malden Holy Cross Cemetery in 1871 for the burial of John's daughter Mary, the first of his grandchildren who died in infancy.

Patrick and Mary saw many more grandchildren buried in the family plot in the 1870s and 1880s before their own deaths:

  • Three of Thomas' young children: Alice, Mary and Agnes.
  • Four other of John's children: John, James, Patrick and Sarah.

In 1878 Patrick and Mary buried son Francis' wife Bridget there, as well her son John who died 2 months later. That same year, the family had sad news from Brooklyn, New York, that Patrick and Mary's son James had died at age 37 of pneumonia.[19] [20] It is likely that Patrick and Mary never met their other two grandchildren who were born in New York.

After his wife Bridget died, Frank moved back to live with Patrick and Mary, along with his young children Joseph and Isabella. In 1880, the South Boston household included Patrick and Mary, age 65, sons Frank and Joseph, daughters Mary and Catherine and the two grandchildren.[21]

Orphan Grandchildren

Frank died in 1881 at age 31, leaving his children Joseph and Isabella as orphans. Patrick and Mary soon moved the extended family to Malden where their youngest daughter Agnes helped raise Frank's children. Sons John and Thomas did not make the move to Malden.

Move to Malden

In Malden, the Sheridan family lived at 384 Medford St, in a large house owned by Patrick Sheridan. The household likely included unmarried daughters Mary, Catherine and Agnes, son Joseph and the orphaned grandchildren Joseph and Isabella. Isabella died in 1888, and Patrick buried her in Holy Cross Cemetery. His daughter Ann Riley died that same year.[22]

Patrick died of cancer on May 9, 1892, in Malden, Massachusetts, age 76 years,[23] and was buried in the family plot.

Mary died of pneumonia on December 23, 1893, in Malden, Massachusetts, age 75 years. Mary and Patrick's names were never added to the marker which was erected in 1879 by son Frank memorializing his wife and infant son. No more names would be added to the marker until Agnes's death in 1951, the last of the children to die.[24]
