Biography

Sgt. Daniel Lynch served in the United States Civil War.

Daniel B. Lynch was born about December 1843 in Sullivan County, New York. He was the son of Robert and Cornelia (Edwards) Lynch. [1]

In 1860, at 17, he was a Bark Peeler in Thompson, Sullivan County, New York; soon after he began working for the railroad in Elmira, New York. [2]


On September 9, 1861, he enlisted in the Army at Elmira for 3 years, giving his birthplace as Sullivan County, NY. He was described as 5’-9” tall with grey eyes, dark hair and a fair complexion. He served in Company H of the 50th Engineers, being mustered in as a Musician. In November 1861 he was promoted to 1st Class Private and later began serving as an Artificer [Carpenter]. On February 8, 1864, he reenlisted. During 1964 he was detailed as an Orderly in the Army of the Potomac and for six months was on the staff of General Grant. He was promoted to Corporal in February 1965 and then Sergeant in April 1865. He was mustered out on June 13, 1865 with his company at Fort Berry, Virginia. [3] [4] [5] [6]

On June 24, 1865, Daniel was working as a laborer and living with his father and step-mother in Elmira, Chemung County, New York. [7]

In 1866, Daniel married Sarah E. James. In 1870, they were in Elmira where Daniel was a Carpenter. Their children were: Elvira (4), Frances (2), and George, 11 months old. Elvira was born in Michigan and the other two in New York. By 1880, they were in Southport with four children: Cora, Frankie, Georgie and Freddie. [8] [9]

By 1890, the family was in Binghamton, Broome County, New York. In 1892, Sarah’s mother, 80-years-old Eliza James was in their household. In 1900, Daniel and Sarah were in Union, Broome County, New York. [10] [11] [12]

Sarah died May 29, 1905 in Lestershire, Broome County, NY (later known as Johnson City). Daniel and his son Fred were in Union, New York that year. [13]

About 1907, Daniel married again to Augusta S. (Nichols) Kittle. In 1910, they were living on Arch Street in Union, NY, where Augusta was working at the shoe works. [14]

August died in 1917. In 1920, Daniel was living with his son-in-law and daughter, John & Frances Worden on Spring Forrest Avenue in Binghamton. In November he entered the Bath Veterans Home for the winter and was discharged in May 1921. They noted he had three fingers on his left hand missing. He was admitted again in November 1921 but wasn’t discharged until September 1924. He returned in November and was finally released in August 1925. [15] [16]

Daniel Lynch died June 13, 1926 Binghamton, Broome County, New York. He is buried in Floral Park Cemetery, Johnson City, Broome County, New York. [17] [18]

A prayer service for Daniel B. Lynch was held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John H. Worden, 44 Spring Forest avenue. The funeral was held at 2:30 o’clock at the funeral chapel of Bellby & Rice, 34 Broad street, Johnson City. The Rev. John R. Austin officiated, assisted by the Rev. Herbert E. Cook. Mrs. William Larrabee and Mrs. Arthur Whitney sang. The pallbearers were Albert and Henry Worden and Harold Lynch, all grandsons. Joseph, Leon and Adrain Huff, all nephews. Burial was in Floral Park cemetery. Willawanna Tribe of Red Men had charge of the services at the grave – The Binghamton Press, Thursday, June 17, 1926.
