Anni-Frid was born in 1945 in Norway as a so-called "Tyskerbarn"[1] (German child), a child whose father is a German soldier. When she was still a toddler, she emigrated to Sweden with her grandmother. Her mother joined them soon after, only to die of kidney failure a few months later at the age of 21, leaving Frida's grandmother to raise her alone.[2] Frida's talent for singing became apparent in her teenage years when she started performing in a swing band.[3]
In 1969, she met fellow musician Benny Andersson. By the time he produced her first solo album, they were already engaged.[4] In the next years, she was still on stage as a solo artist, while Benny had started to perform with Björn Ulvaeus and Agnetha Fältskog. Eventually she joined them and the group was later renamed "ABBA".[4] In 1974, ABBA was the Swedish participant at the Eurovision Song Contest and won it with the song Waterloo.[5] This was the starting point of a very successful career as a group, although the start wasn't that easy, because they weren't taken very seriously, being contestants of the Eurovision Song Contest. The real breakthrough as a band came with the next LP in 1976. But starting with this LP, they had numerous #1-hits around the globe.[5] Even during the ABBA-years, Frida recorded a solo-LP, which was a huge success in Sweden.[4] At the end of 1982, the group performed for the last time together before they took a break, but their songs were still a commercial success.[5]
Frida continued to sing and record, but her solo album 'Shine' did not match the success of her previous solo efforts following ABBA's breakup.[1] After that she started to focus more on her environmental work and got the public face of the organization "Artister för miljö" (Artists for the environment), although she still worked with other artists and recorded some duets.[4] In 2021, ABBA released a new album, which was eagerly awaited by the fans.
At the age of 18, she married Ragnar Fredriksson[4], the trombonist of "Bengt Sandlunds Storband"[6] and had two children with him, a son and the daughter Ann Lise-Lotte (Fredriksson) Fredriksson Casper.[3] They were divorced in 1970. By 1971 Frida lived together with Benny Andersson, they eventually married in October 1978, but were divorced again in 1981.[4] In 1986, she met Heinrich Ruzzo Reuß (1950-1999), whose mother was Swedish and who was educated in Sweden himself. They married in 1992 and lived mostly in Switzerland. Ruzzo died in 1999 of cancer.
