As memorialized on his gravestone, John Henry Lynn was born on 20 November 1827 in Wardensville, Hardy County, West Virginia. In the 1830 census, only one Lynn or Linn appears in Hardy County (then Virginia). George Lynn, age 30-39, did indeed have a 0-4-year-old male in his household, as well as three males age 5-29, two females age 0-14, and one female age 30-39.[1] The township in 1830 was not stated. However, again in 1840, George and family were the only Lynns in Hardy County, and the township was listed as Wardensville. Again, there was one male in the household matching John's age.[2]
On 27 August 1850, John appeared as a 22-year-old laborer living in the home of Edward and Theresa Linn, ages 31 and 24 respectively, in the 23rd District of Hardy County, Virginia ...
While John later named his third son George, he named his fifth son Edward. George Lynn, apparent father of both John and the elder Edward, likely died between 1840 and 1850 since he is not found in 1850 or any later census.
Sometime between the 1850 census and 8 August 1860, John and others of the Lynn family left Virginia for Nashport in Licking Township, Muskingum County, Ohio. John is found there in the latter year's census as a 34-year-old farmer living in the home of his sister and brother-in-law Julia and Norton Claypool. Also in the home were the wife and children of John's brother Edward, who is not found this year and presumably had died ...
On 20 July 1870, John Linn, Theresa Linn, and Theresa's daughter Ellen all were living still in the Nashport home of Norton Claypool ...
Less than four months later, on 23 November 1870, John Lynn married Malinda Ann Victor in Muskingum County.[6] Application for the marriage license was made by Thomas M. Lynn. John and Malinda had the following children born in Licking Township ...
In 1880, though not found in birth registers, another son was born to John and Malinda. He is included in the 1880 census ...
A fifth son was born to John and Malinda on 7 July 1884. While also not found in birth registers, that son appears with his widowed mother in the 1900 census. John Lynn died in Nashport, Muskingum County on 28 September 1896 at the age of 69 years, five months, and eight days.[9] He was laid to rest in Hanover Cemetery in neighboring Licking County.[10] Hanover in fact lies on the border with Muskingum County, and Nashport, Muskingum County lies right on the border with Licking County.
Malinda lived another 22 years and died in Licking Township on 10 December 1922, aged 73 years, 2 months, 10 days. Her death certificate relates also that she was buried in Hanover Cemetery.[12]
