Joshua was living with Zibe and Maggie Collins, who owned the farm on which Joshua worked.^[7]

Josiah fought for the Confederacy in the American Civil War. On 4 March 1862, he enlisted as a Private in Company G, 11th Georgia Infantry Battalion. He transferred to Company G, 47th Georgia Infantry Regiment on 12 May of the same year, and mustered out on 1 August. He enlisted again on 15 February 1864.^[8][9][10]
