At Perth on 19 June 1553, Queen Mary granted to John Lyon, son and heir apparent of John Lyon, of Hatton of Eassie, a confirmation of the lands of Hatton of Eassie, Littlemill, Lochmill, Fawinche, and the lands of Bow, in the Forest of Platane and sheriffdom of Forfar, on the resignation of John senior who reserved the liferent of Hatton of Eassie to himself and Marjorie Ogilvie, his wife. [1]

At Balgowny in the parish of Eassie, on 15 July 1565, Patrick Lyon, preceptor of the hospital of Balgownie-Esse, granted in favour of John Lyon, son and heir apparent of John Lyon of Hatton of Eassie, the lands of Balgownie and its mill in the sheriffdom of Forfar.[2]

It was probably about this time around 1565 that John married. He had two sons:

  • John his heir
  • George who obtained Balmuckety near Kirriemuir and was then designed of Balmuckety.

On 14 November 1575, designed as John Lyon, younger of Halton, he was a witness to the sasine by which James Annand was infeft as heir of his deceased brother Thomas of Kynquheries, in the lands of Easter Persie, and Muir Persie, in the lordship of Kingoldrum.

On 12 April 1577, Margaret Drummond, relict of John Campbell of Murthlie and then spouse to John Lyon of Cossins, with consent of her husband granted a tack of Murthlie to John Campbell of Lawers. [3]

On 11 July 1580, Margaret Drummond, relict of Mr Robert Spittell, and John Lyon, apparent of Cossins, now her spouse, raise an action against Cristean Spittell, sister and heir of the deceased Mr Nicoll Spittell, who was father's brother and heir to the deceased Sybilla Spittell, which Sybilla was daughter and heir of the deceased Mr Robert Spittell, for the purpose of having a contract made between the deceased William Drummond of Balloch, Isobell Crammond, his spouse, and the above Margaret Drummond, their daughter, on the one part, and the above Mr Robert Spittell on the other part, dated 30 May 1552, transferred to Cristeane, as sister and heir of Nicoll. [4]

John Lyon, younger of Cossins, was one of the principal actors in the raid of Ruthven, which took place in 1582. His kinsmen James Lyon of Easter Ogil and William Lyon of Balgillo in Tannadice were also involved.A Summons of Treason was issued against the principal parties at Edinburgh of 20 Aug 1584.[5] John elder of Cossisns died about 1585 and John as eldest son succeeded to the title of Cossins.

Removed source quoting thepeerage.com as it is not a contemporary source and it is unreliable. It gives Margaret Drummond as mother of his children which is very dubious see her biography as this was her third marriage and she was married to John Campbell of Murthlie at that time.
