He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1790 and in 1792 was ordained as pastor of the Congregational Church in Sunderland, Massachusetts. In 1794 he removed to South Hero, Vermont, where he organized a church and became its first minister, serving in that capacity from 1802 to 1840. He studied law and was active in politics and public service, serving as a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1799 until 1802, 1804 until 1806, 1808, and 1810 to 1814, and was for several terms the chief judge of the Grand Isle County Court. He was elected as a Federalist to the Fourteenth United States Congress, serving from March 4, 1815 until March 3, 1817.[2][3]
He was married to Esther Newell. They had three children:[2]
Esther Lyon, born 1799; married Daniel Brown.
Abigail Lyon, born 1801; married Abijah Hatch.
Newell Lyon, was a lawyer in Burlington, Vermont.
Lyon died in South Hero on April 4, 1841 and was interred in Grand Isle Cemetery in Grand Isle, Vermont.[3] He left instructions that he should be buried without any monument, so his grave is unmarked.[2]
