John was born in 1788. He was the son of Moses Lyon and Diadema Banks. He relocated to Bloomville, Delaware County, New York in 1803 with his parents.
Relocated to Homer, Cortland, New York by 1830.
Settled in Troy [Armenia], Bradford, Pennsylvania in 1833, where he farmed on 400 acres of land.
A Methodist Episcopal minister, he took charge of the church near his farm. He was remembered for his efforts on "behalf of temperance and the good of the community".
First Justice of the Peace in Armenia, Bradford, Pennsylvania in 1844.
He "rode circuit many years" as a traveling preacher and was called back to New York to act as general agent for publications of the Methodist Episcopal ministry.
John Lyon and his wife Phebe Kiff were together described as "salt of the earth".
