William was christened on 1 Dec 1816 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire as William Lyon, although his parents John Lyon and Hannah Woodward appear not to have been married. John's occupation was recorded as toolmaker, and the family's address as Prescot.
By June 6th 1841, John and Hannah were living in Hackley Moss, Eccleston with their (presumed) sons William and Isaac. All four were given the surname Lyon in the census. John was a tool maker, while William and Isaac were apprentice tool makers.
By March 30th 1851, John and Hannah were still in Eccleston. John was a master tool maker, Hannah was a house servant; both were unmarried, and Hannah was recorded with surname Woodward. Their (presumed) son William Woodward was still single and living with them; he was now a journeyman tool maker. The household also included 14-year-old Luke Dunn, an errand boy.
William's father died in 1858, and was buried on 27 May 1858 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. His age was recorded as 62, and his address as Eccleston.
By April 7th 1861, William was still single and still a toolmaker. He was living with his mother in Holmes Buildings, St Helens Road, Eccleston. His mother was described in the census as a widow.
William's mother died in 1864, and was buried on 7 Feb 1864 at St Thomas' Church in Eccleston, Lancashire. Her age wasn't recorded in the burial record, but was recorded as 83 in the death registration. Her address was Haydock.
