Biography

Mary Lyon was born in about 1778 in Lancashire.

Mary married Robert Bacon on 20 Aug 1797 at Farnworth Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. Both were of Farnworth near Prescot; Robert was a potter, Mary a spinster. The witnesses were Joseph Shaw and Peter Shaw.

Their daughter Ann was born on 14 Jul 1799, and christened on 4 Aug 1799 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Her father's occupation was recorded as labourer, and the family's address as Prescot.

Their daughter Elizabeth was born on 30 Jan 1802, and christened on 21 Feb 1802 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Her father's occupation was recorded as labourer, and the family's address as Prescot.

Their son Job was born on 13 Dec 1803, and christened on 1 Jan 1804 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as labourer, and the family's address as Prescot.

Their son Thomas was born on 4 Apr 1806, and christened on 4 May 1806 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as carter, and the family's address as Prescot.

Another son Job was born on 23 Dec 1808, and christened on 1 Jan 1809 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as carter, and the family's address as Prescot.

Their daughter Mary was christened on 13 Feb 1814 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Her father's occupation was recorded as carter, and the family's address as Prescot.

Robert died in 1836, and was buried on 3 Nov 1836 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. His age was recorded as 65, and his address as Prescot.

By June 6th 1841, Mary was in Toll Bars, Prescot. 7-year-old Margaret Hewitt was with her when the census was taken. Mary's daughter Mary appears to have married James Hewitt, and had a daughter Mary christened in 1834, and possibly this Mary is the person enumerated as Margaret Hewitt. Unfortunately the family has thus far proved difficult to track.

Mary died in 1865, and was buried on 15 Feb 1865 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Her age was recorded as 87, and her address as Whiston.

Research Notes

Given that she hasn't been found in the censuses of 1851 or 1861, there's some uncertainty whether the 1865 burial record is the right person; however no suitable deaths/burials were found for her in Prescot district before then.
