Biography

There are three different birth dates for Austin. A family member, who shares the September 22 date, assures me that our grandfather told her they shared a birthday, so I am satisfied that this is the correct date. Any other date listed in this document is just a copy of the public record.

For a while the young couple lived with India's parents, and eventually moved into their own home, which was next to his parents. All together they had 7 children. Austin worked as a coal miner, leaving home for several months at a time to work in the coal fields of West Virginia. When the older children were old enough to work in the mills and factories of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the family relocated and stayed there for several years. India operated a boarding house which gave housing and meals to several young women who were co-workers and friends of her several daughters.

When the depression began it became obvious that it was time to return home to the mountains. Austin went back to farming. India gardened and took care of the home. They lived comfortably in their small home, and every visitor was welcomed and offered food and cool well water, coffee or tea.

Austin died on November 30, 1960, and was buried at Blue Ridge Chapel Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, located just off the Blue Ridge Parkway near the community of Piper's Gap, Virginia.

Memories: 1
Enter a personal reminiscence or story.
Austin Lyons, "Grandpa" to many of us, would come into the house for a break, pick up his guitar and harmonica neck holder and start pickin'. He was a good musician and storyteller. He was fascinated with his Native ancestry and would often tell us stories. He knew every tree and plant in the Appalachian woods.
