There are two separate envelopes, the second one appears to be primarily the files from after he was wounded.
John enlisted on 8 April 1863 at Readville, Massachusetts. He listed his birthplace as Chicago, Illinois. He was 19 years old, single and working as a laborer when he enlisted.
John's physical description is listed as 5' 5" tall, with a light complexion, brown eyes, and black hair.
In August and September 1863, John was detailed as an officer's servant for Lt. Tucker
John was wounded badly in the left hand on April 1, 1864, while on picket at Jacksonville, Florida. He had a gunshot wound (minie ball) that penetrated his left hand and damaged the phalanges of his thumb.
John appeared on a hospital muster roll for No. 6 US General Hospital (Old) (Colored) Beaufort, South Carolina. He was attached to the hospital rolls on April 7, 1864. He was at that hospital through January 1, 1864, when he was "transferred North"
From May to July 1865, John was absent sick at DeCamp General Hospital, David's Island NY, from January 6, 1865 through July.

On April 1, 1865, John was transferred to Fort Wood, Bedloe's Island, NY. [1][2]
John applied for a pension on September 30, 1865, due to being wounded/invalid.[3]
