Emma Jane LYONS is believed to have lost most of her left leg (above the knee - and half of the thigh) around the age of 8 years - the family story is that she was jumping on her bed with her younger siblings and fell across her boots and slipped on the floor resulting in a broken leg - proper medical treatment was not readily available in the Bulga area and the leg became infected and gangrene set in. The accident occurred around the time of the death of her mother during flood times. The leg was later removed without medication other than alcohol.
