Prosper Mérimée (September 28, 1803–September 23, 1870) was a French dramatist, historian, archaeologist, and short story writer. He is perhaps best known for his novella Carmen.
Prosper Mérimée, born in Paris on 5 Vendémiaire year 13 (September 28, 1803) was the only son of painter Jean François Léonor Mérimée and Anne Louise Moreau. He was a first cousin of brothers Augustin Fresnel (physicist) and Fulgence Fresnel (orientalist).
He died in Cannes on September 23, 1870, of complications of asthma.
