Biography

BOOK - RICE COUNTY FAMILIES. PUB. 1981 Lambert and Gertrude Guelen Maas. Lambert, born in Wychen, Holland, on March 10, 1840, and Gertrude, also from Wychen, born August 16, 1855. Marriage date and occupation unknown; to this union 8 children were born. Anna 1879-1954; John 1881-1959; Jacob 1882-1953; Cornelius 1884-1959; Adrian 1886-1945; Theodore 1889-1959; George 1891-1955; and William 1892-1958. The family emigrated to the United States in 1911 and settled in Kimberly, WI, but sometime later moved to Rice County where they purchased a farm just south of Faribault. It ws at this time they decided to add to their family by adopting a 3-year old daughter named Mary Schindler, born September 1, 1912. The 2nd generation, their son, Theodore, was 22 years of age when coming to the United States, bringing with him a pair of wooden shoes which he wore while living in Holland; they will be handed down from generation to generation by the family. Then Theodore met Antionette VanOrsow, born October 13, 1892, daughter of John and Mary Ziegers VanOrsow, from Oss, Holland, who had come to the United States in 1908. They were married on June 23, 1914; 9 children were born to them: Lambert, May 1, 1915, married to Leona Prebble; Marie, November 14, 1916 (died 1976), married to Edward Gillespie; Gertrude, January 25, 1918, married to Harlan Wutschke; Anna, April 23, 1919, married Bernard Carpenter (1919-1980); john, November 11, 1920, married to Catherine Sammon; and Antionette, June 6, 1922, married to Donald Friesen; 3 children passed away in infancy. Theodore and Antioneette were farming north of Faribault until she became sick and passed away in Rochester on August 13, 1925. In the year of 1932, Theodore moved to a farm east of Faribault, which he later purchased. On October 8, 1959; Agnes makes her home in Faribault. This brings us to the 3rd generation, Anna, born April 23, 1919, who attended school in Faribault, married Bernard Carpenter on July 16, 1941, and they spent 10 years farming before moving into Faribault, purchasing a home on 2nd Avenue N.W. Bernard worked a short time at Faribo Woolen Mills, and then was employed for 29 years at Land O'Lakes Dairy before his death on December 20, 1980. Anna worked for the Faribo Woolen Mill for 26 years, before retiring on February 27, 1981. Our family consists of 5 children. Daughter, Mary Jean, born February 8, 1942, married Marvin Wedin. They live in Faribault and have 2 daughters, Melissa, October 17, 1966, and Michelle, November 5, 1968. Our 2nd daughter, Patricia, March 26, 1943, is married to Glenn David, lives in Kilkenny, and their 3 children are Jodine, August 19, 1967; Mark, April 4, 1970; and LoriAnn, June 13, 1971. Roger was born August 8, 1944, and lives at home. Our 2nd son is Kenneth, born August 22, 1945, married Kathleen Kerri Vargo (now divorced) and lives in rural Faribault. His children are Dion, March 10, 1967; Shane, February 8, 1971; and Angie, September 10, 1972. Our youngest is Janice, born January 28, 1948, married to Dan Borgstahl and lives in Faribault. They have 2 children, Kristi, December 1, 1970, and Steven, February 18, 1979. This concludes one family's part of 5 generations starting with Lambert Maas.
